Blegh @ making mead
    #5229907 -

When I realized the recipie I started with for making meast is one that yields a "paint thinner" quality of alcohol, I had to move on and find a better recipie.

Sadly, the better recipies are often not short meads, they are long meads, and as such can take months to finish. I like short mead, I can start a batch and be able to drink the stuff in a month.

Sadly, I also have no brewing stores in my area from which to buy yeast.

eBay has some decent wine yeasts going for around $5 shipped for 3 packages. So this is a decent option, but I'd far rather get an ale yeast.

And then, there's the fact that I'm poor.

Preferrably, I'd like to make at least 2 liters of yeast for $20-30. Sadly, I think that might be kind of hard. Honey is expensive, if I don't use enough honey, I get a paint-thinner mead. If I don't mix things right and use too much honey (however this isn't very likely), I get a long mead and have to wait for months to drink it.

I'm getting frustrated. I want to make homebrew mead, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on it, and I don't want it to take more than 1.5 months to be ready for drinking.

Why not make a batch of long mead and a batch of short, do that once or twice a month untill the first batch of long mead is ready (drink the short stuff untill then). Then just make long mead and you'll have a constant supply of long mead after that.

I bet the long mead tastes heaps better.

My friend makes long mead, takes about 4-5 months to brew too a semi smooth flavor.
I been craving it ever since he moved to another state.

I asked a couple liquor stores if they had any, and they give me that deer in the headlights look and say"we have leinekugels Honey Weiss beer in isle 6" :frown:

I chaulked that up there with hemp trifold wallets, old style side striking pilot lighters, and deer jerky.{non stick}
Something you will never see for sale.

make a cysor or melomel or such, by adding fruit(s) you cut down the fermintation time.

as for yeast i prefer champagne yeast for my meads. it allows higher alcohol content

funny you posted this, i was thinking last night of starting a new batch. i just finished my last bottle of cinnamin/peach mead the other day

I'm tempted to try a melomel, it sounds tasty. But before I do that I want to have successfully made a bottle of some nice, clear sparkling mead.

Perhaps not sparkling, if it proves complicated.

I once tried using bread yeast for mead, that was just a stupid idea. :puke:

Wow, I can't believe there's nowhere to buy brewers yeast in your town. I live(d) in a very small town and you could buy it in quite a few places, including a few grocery stores.

if it takes about a year to make good mead, start making one batch per month now so a year from now, you wont be bitching about mead taking so long. good things take time. invest in good stuff now so you will be able to enjoy it for years to come.

This here, this is a good idea. I can have some long mead fermenting while I also work on short mead for immediate drinkage.
