Graftin questions from a complete newb...

I have some knowledge of grafting but nowhere near is much as I`d like.....thats where you guys come in. Few questions......

1. Could grafting a loph onto a Pedro be accomplished in the dormant months?

2. This might sound stupid but could one graft a seedling pedro or peruvianus onto a mature pedro or peruvianus in order to go through the seemingly long seedling stage faster? If so what should be used to apply pressure on the seedling after the procedure? A rubberband? I just dont want to crush the little fellow.

3. Say that a 3-4cm loph is going to be grafted to a peruvianus and the graft doesnt take could the loph be removed and rooted?

What happens when a graft doesnt take? Do the two wounds simply heal over? Or is it more serious than that?

4. How prone to infection are cut cacti? Would doing the graft outdoors lower the chances of infection? Am I dealing with something as contamination prone as say mushroom substrate?

5. How old should a seedling (Loph or Tricho) be before it can be grafted?

6. How often do grafts take? Is it higher for larger cacti than seedlings?

7. How high up would one have to cut a 4cm Peyote for it to produce little ones (I heard that as long as a few aeroles are left it will pup)? Can a Loph this young even do it?

Any help in any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. also any websites with teks would be nice, the only one I know of was mushmush but it seems that the methods section is no longer up and whats left of the rest of the site is in a language I dont speak :frown:.

I'll see if I can be of help here...

1. Yes, you can graft all year round as long as the grafting stock, and your seedlign are activly growing... meaning if they are dormant, they will take, but probably not show massive growth.... if they are both activly growing (seedling to an indoor persk.) you will see much better faster results.. higher success rate.

2. The seedlign stage is actually yhr fastest growth of the cactus... no true need to graft a seedling unless you plan to make it's adult life much fater.

3. Yes... simply wait till it's calused over, re-pot... or if your bold enough... re-graft.

4. They are not very prone to infections. Not something I would be very worried about. Mold in the seedling stage is prolyl the worst you should be looking out for.

5. I've grafted my seedlings at 2 days old.

6. Be sterile when doing your graft and you should have a high succes s rate... be fast and clean.. and you shouldn't have problems.... if your really nervous about it, i'm making a dvd that will be offerd for sale in the near future with an excellent how to on grafting.

7. simply take a small slice off the top... and it'll pup out to continue it's growth.. and yes... my graphs seem to pup at 3 months or sooner.

Put me on the list to get it. I dont expect I`ll be attempting my first graft until then anyway.

And what do you use to secure small seedlings to the stock?

Nothing, the seedling will have enough sap to be able to hold on by itself.

the success is in the moisture / after graft care.
I'll explain all this in the dvd and more.

One more thing I heard that aereoles can be used as scions in a graft have you ever tried this? This is the original article I read....http://www.lapshin.org/cultivar/N12/articl2e.htm...has anyone tried this?
