is there any good r&b music, or is it all crap?

so all r&b music I hear is on the music channels on mtv an some dutch channels and most of it is crap! I figured like with all music styles there must be some good artists in the genre that stand out. Can anyone name some? Obviously I can't :smirk:

another possibility is that I just don't get that style of music :shrug:

I like classic soul music.

but today's commerical R&B is just lame pop music for morons just like everything else that graces the airwaves and MTV.

I listen to many things, from ambient to psytrance, from jazz to deathmetal. so my music taste is pretty varieted :laugh:

That's why I wondered if it was me that doesn't understand the r&b music or that the music is generally crappy. Most rap and hiphop on tv sucks too, but i know there are good rap/hiphop acts out there and like to listen now and then although it isn't really my thing.

It's you. Hah. I think for most genres, the stuff that is heavily promoted on MTV and whatnot grows thin pretty quick. Musical tastes are shaped heavily by the context in which you grow up. If you don't have exposure to a genre beyond MTV, you won't anything in that genre with appreciable depth.

I never liked rap or hiphop until I got into breakdancing. At that point I basically had to listen to hiphop to find music I could practice too. At this point I primarily listen to beats and very little rock/guitar. Before I primarily listened to music for the emotional or intellectual stimulation. Songs about feelings, songs about revolution, blah blah blah. Well later I found another mode, which is listening to something bust a move to. A whole lot of shallow music suddenly makes sense when you'd rather dance then be all deep.

There is depth out there as well. Having some awareness of blues origins from playing guitar, I found the evolution from old train-type blues to stuff like DJ Spooky's "under the influence" pretty interesting. With the right context I can see the music as having depth. The fact that Sonic Youth is mixed in maybe just helped bridge me to hipohop.

I can't define R+B well, I don't know what it is really. I think the label of R+B created by the music label is something a lot of black music tries to rebel against, while at the same time they are producing something the music industry would still call R+B. I realize now there is a lot of good music out there I just don't know.

As an interesting side note, I saw a guy emoting along with an R&B song while I was driving. He was doing the finger wagging "No..No..No.." and other Aretha Franklin type moves.

how about 'the greatest rapper you've never heard of'? no way to really describe his style. he incorporates everything from rap, r&b, to soul. check out the song 'anythang' to start off with. you'll find he talks about subjects that many of you will relate to. like 'doobie ashtray' anyway like i said give a listen to some of his songs and report back here with what you think.
