transcendent vs suppressed

I am reading a book that is loosely based on the art movement (architecture, painting, fashion, etc) in communist Russia, and the writer pointed out that abstract art was banned at the time, while the latest trend, or rather evolution in art was to "suppress" the human aspect, and "suppress materialism."

For some reason, that sounded a little different than my point of view.  Really, it would be transcending in my eyes.  Anyways, extrapolating that, even those who claim to transcend, how would you know the difference between suppressing your materialistic instincts (or rather, habits?) and transcending them... ?

It takes transcendance to understand the intent of suppression; suppressing is more physical and objective than transcending, I suppose.

Very intentarresting post.
