terrarium 101 questions
    #499880 -

I'm new so bare with me!
Do you still need a dripsheild for if your growing with casing? And what are some simple alternatives to a dripsheild? Ive heard of smearing the lid with petroleum jelly..hmmm, what about contams?...Oh ya, and Ive been meaning to ask what the best containors are for terrariums? The rubbermaid ones seem to have loose lids and let out moisture, does it depend on what model rubbermaid container you get? I just cant afford a 100$ aquarium... Oh well, thats all..thanks everyone!:)

heed this:
simple is better.
with that said; you dont need a drip shield at all and you do need a rubbermaid bin.
go to walmart. get either a big rubbermaid container or an 'under the bed' plastic storage contaimer at least 10 inches tall; at least. anything that you can enclose to keep the moisture in is pretty much decent. thats really the bottom line. if you dont think the particular tub youre getting has a tight enough lid just walk over to the home improvement section and get some door/window weatherstripping and use that to seal it up. just make sure you open it daily for air exchange. and then when you check out and have your whole terrarium setup (about $20 at most) drive down to any garden shop or amyplace that sells potting soil; maybe even in your same walmart and get 1 bag of perlite (3.99 usually). now youve spent $25 dollars max and have the same terrarium that everyone else here uses.
EDIT
im sorry. the REASON you dont need a drip shield is because youre using perlite [i will assume]. drip shields are for catching mist particles from when you hand spray your terrarium; which you wont have to bother ever spraying at all if you can spare the 4 dollars. and the bag of perlite will last quite a while.

I don't know where you're buying your aquariums, but my 10 gal. cost me $7.99 at a nearby fish store. I like the cleanliness and transparency of glass. That's just my taste.

After a crop, you can spray the shit out of it with glass cleaner and you're damn near germ-free. Can't say that with plastic.

wow. i was unaware that a glass terrarium was so cheap; iuve never even looked at prices for one. i just assumed they were expensive being glass. however my plastic container is clear so it works well enough but i will look into that; thanks for the info.

UH, glass aqariums up to like twenty gallons arent usually over twenty dollars, but if you get something like a forty/fifty gallon with hood and light they tend to be closer to a hundred dollars. So, your both right

Thanks for filling me in about the weather stripping, sounds like a plan.
Doesnt the perlite only retain some of the humidity, I thought you needed to spray as well because you do need 90-100% humidity dont you?

Thats unreal! 7$ for an aquarium, man I gotta do some more shopping.
I agree with you about glass being better for cleaning when your done, and it is nicer having a perfectly clear space to look in.
Thanks for your reply!

perlite only provides the moisture/humidity. it does not retain humidity. no spraying. all you need is perlite and love for your young ones :)

At Home Depot I buy a piece of glass and have it cut to fit in the top plastic lip of the 10 gal. aquarium. They cut it right in the store free. It's about $3.00 after tax and fits perfectly. A bead of silicone around the plastic makes a seal that can't be matched by tupperware.

I cabinet pull knob affixed to the top with a dot of silicone finishes the project.

It's perfection in its simplicity. Less than 10 bucks for a terrarium that looks like a jewel case. Airtight, easy to clean, transparent.
