Questions from a beginner.
    #4994624 -

Ive read all the teks posted on this, and i became extremely interested in growing my own shrooms. I have two questions:

1- I wish to know the most reliable suppliers of spore scringes and your experiences with those suppliers...

2- Why not use natural fertilizers to increase the potency of the mushrooms? (instead of using dung). Is there any reason to believe that this wouldn't work, or would make the mushroom toxic? I know this has been discussed before, but i havent seen any substancial evidence to think that this wouldnt work. Most of the increase in potency (at least from what ive heard) is due to Nitrate, which is found abudantly in dung (especially the horse kind). Why shouldn't we use other fertilizers? (Nitrate only capsules or liquid)

Thanks for your time  :smirk:

1- ralphsters spores. check te sponsors forum.
2- it just makes sense and has proven to work best on dung, being that thats what cubies have been growing for eons. its like organic farming. do it like nature intended it to be done..... in your closet.... with lysol.... and H2O2... shit. nevermind.

I, for one, plan to test out the nitrate fertilizer theory very soon. Worm casting are used for a nitrate source as well as some other natural sources, but I don't think that the use of ammonium or potassium nitrates has been explored fully.

Yes, cubensis grows on dung, but a lot of cubensis strains are found on substrates other than dung.

spores101 is a great provider of a very extensive list of strains. They are, from what i have seen, the cheapest vendor at 19 bucks for one syringe with shipping. Best of all they have a 7 day arrival guarantee in which they will refund your money (for syringe or print only) if package does not arrive in a week.

Rather than ask this forum.

Why don't you ask YOURSELF...... why ...

Commercial edible (Agaricus or Agaricus bisporus)mushroom cultivators after 100 + years of study & a few billion dollars in production facility investment world wide don't just pour on Nitrates, Miracle Grow & whatever other fertilizers that are handy?

Because it doesn't work that way, sort of like fish out of water.

Read the FAQ & a Stamets book or 3, and you might understand more.

Synthetic compost requires the addition of ammonium nitrate or urea at the outset of composting to provide the compost microflora with a readily available form of nitrogen for their growth and reproduction.

There are a few that do...... but you have to compost your substrate, you can't just expect mycelium to be able to break down ammonia.
