casing question
    #1373558 - 03/13/03 06:52 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I'm not quite sure about some aspects of casing. After I case, where/how should I store them? Right now I have them sitting covered in tin foil, and a temp of around 75. Is this ok for casing? thanks

It is more desirable to have your casing at around 80/85 f while the mycelium is colonizing the casing layer. The drop in temp (from 85 to 70/75)when the casing is put into the fruiting chamber is one of the triggers for pin formation.

If you got room in your incubator you should chuck it back in there for a few days.
If you don't have an incubator, it would be a good idea to build one.

75 will do but you may need to be more agressive when initiating pinning than usual such as cold shocking and or more frequent air exchanges.

This applys to the same topic, so I didnt want to start another thread, I am not hijacking your shit though dude. Anyways, had a quick ? about the ingedients in the casing. I was thinking of using some store bought stuff that sounded good. Lemme know what you think plz. Its 50/60% peat moss, coconut husk fibers (coir pith), composted bark fines, a wetting agent, and fertilizer. The fertilizer is derived from ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate, calcium phosphate, and potassium sulfate. Its called MiracleGro, Moisture control Potting Mix. Any help is appreciated.

Thx

This stuff is nutrisus and bad just go with verm or coco coir or a combo of 60/40 coco verm. For a casing layer you dont want anything nutritous cause then it can contame real easy. Verm and coco coir act like a contam barrier

Pet supply stores with a good reptile/terrarium section - it's sold as animal bedding - "Forest Bed" is a brand I've seen used.
