Help....Beginner...
    #1327952 - 02/23/03 05:06 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I just read that new(er) basic growing guide with all the pictures...that guide kicks ass by the way...very very easy to understand. Anyway I have a few questions about the procees, sterilization and such if anyone would like to help me out with some answers...

1. In the guide they show the cakes simply sitting on top of a layer of damp perlite. Does that mean you don't need to surround the cakes with compost or anything like that?

2. How do you ensure sterilization of everything? Is there a prefered method of washing your tools? Say like washing everything in peroxide?

3. If you could add anything to that guide or give anymore helpful tips what would you suggest?

Thanx in advance, much appreciated!!!

My dog doesn't mess with cakes but he can help u with tools.

U can soak them in alcohol or use a PC or a autoclave
I use to use alcohol b4 I purchased a autoclave.
I'd say soaking them in alcohol would prob be the fast cheep way of doing it.
U could also boil them if there metal.

Cakes get the nutriants from it's self so there is no need for compost.
The perlite is for keeping humidity up
If u want to use compost I'd say go with grains and dung/straw compost.

You can just wash your tools with anti bacteria soap and theyll be fine. And you can sit your cakes on the perlite but i would think that your raising your contamination possibilitys by doing that so spray the top of the jar that the cake comes out of with lysol and set it out top of that. Compost is something totally different from cakes so dont worry about compost. AND I WOULD SUGGEST STRONGLY that once you get your cakes out of the jar immediately dunk them in water totally submerged and enclosed so no fridge germs can get to them and sit them in the fridge for 6 hours. It will give the shrooms a new water supply and make them easier to pin.

So after I take the cakes out of the jars I dunk them in water? For how long to I keep them under the water? Or do I just dunk then quickly and then set them in my fruiting chamber?

Get your jars over 205???? Huh?

Oh and what is the best way to maintain a good temperature...I don't think they explained that much in the guide....anyone have any good methods they'd like to share (that would work in conjunction with that specific guide)?

Do you have a pressure cooker/autoclave?
The pitcher tek (do a search on this) worked really well for this guy I know as far as heating goes. You'll have to add another expense in the purchase of an aquarium heater, but the glass vase, and perhaps the heater also, can be picked up at a thrift store for nothing.
