the jar cased its own self!
    #498461 - 12/22/01 03:18 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

ok, when i sterilize my jars i put a sock in the bottom of the pot so the jars dont get overheated, right. but the way the sock overlaps in the bottom of the pot and shit, some of the jars are a bit higher, some are lower. well like two of the jars got water bubling in them, and one of those really got DRENCHED. the other one i cased because mycelium still mannaged to colonize it somehow...but heres the thing - i checked the one that got soaked, and there was mycelium growing on the top layer of verm, because it got wet and acted as a casing! its verrry rich and fluffy and i put it in the terrerium like yesterday, jar and all. ill tell you guys how it turns out, its looking good so far.

You either didn't have your lids on tight enough or you had too much water in your pressure cooker. Next time, try wrapping some foil around the lids as well.

its not uncommon for that layer to colonize. all mine are currently doing that as do my friends jars. id say you got som bigass socks if they overlap like that on your pot and create a noticeable height difference in the jars. next time id say use a ashcloth

I had a similar thing happen with some jars as well. Two of them got some water in them when I was boiling them. I even had two layers of aluminum on them. One jar is completely soaked. Mycelium is only growing in the gaps in the substrate and on top of the vermiculite on the top of the jar. A couple more of the jars also have small damp spots near the top of the jar but these seem to be fine. Would it be possible to plug the holes in the lids of the jars next time with something that would block water but not be airtight?
