Hi, I'm just posting this for all those who still use cakes..
if u case u can get a MUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH higher yield, I've been casing for almost a year now, and wow, the yields are amazing.. I use finch seed in a pint jar and making 1 casing per jar, and my yields are around 25-27g (dry) per jar.
I found that combing more than 1 jar per casing becomes inefficent, it is best to make several casings than a single one.
Another advantage of the single casing is that your cakes will come out quicker, with a single jar casing, I can get my 25g-27g in just 3 weeks, while if I were to do a double casing, that 50-54g would take more than a month and a half to receive.
So instead of doing a double, u could do 2 single casings, and get that 50-54g easily in the 3 weeks (if u results and proceedure resembled mine).
Also I case using some moisture plus potting soil (can't remember the name off my head), but I sterilize that at 400F (~204C) for 30 minutes in my oven.
Well, I'm just here to inform people with my results and hopefully people can have similar to better results.

You get a significantly higher yield only when you add more nutrients. In your case, since you're using potting soil, which isn't a real casing layer, you're basically adding more substrate, which is increasing your yield.
A real casing layer has little available nutrients. YOu only get a slightly larger yield on a casing versus a cake.

when I get a digital camera, I'll post some of my yields, oh the soil I'm using is schultz moisture plus potting mix and contains the following ingredients:
Reed-Sedge Peat
Composted forest compound/Composted rice hulls
Canadian Sphagnum peat moss
hordiculture perlite
lime "for proper Ph balance"
"a wetting agent"
"water holding polymer crystals"
also there is a 0.08% nitrogen content, .12% phosphate
I like this alot, and have been using it since the verm went under. It works wonders. They sell it near the perlite at walmart.
Enjoy.
