As a hardcore electronic music fan, I find the site hilarious. I enjoy how he makes fun of most, if not, all of the subgenres. I personally believe that 99% of electronic music is crap, but that small 1% is golden. I agree with alot of his opinions.

well, I have my tastes. and I could offer recommendations. but really, these are just my opinions.

personally, I think there are some gems in early detroit and chicago sounds as well as some of the italo disco tracks. there's many great IDM records - personally, I think the records warp put out between 1992 and 1998 or so are brilliant. of course, there are some classic electronic records that are essential and have stood the test of time like brian eno, tangerine dream, and kraftwerk. there are some excellent labels like underground resistance and toytronic that I recommend - not everything they put out is in the 1%, but many are.

in my opinion, because electronic-based music is somewhat easy to create with synths or drum machines or VSTs, alot of people have put out music. the instruments are accessible to many more people than many other genres - compare this to the instruments utilized in jazz or classical music (I think these genres have a higher percentage of quality music simply because there is a smaller number of talentless folk using the instruments and thus oversaturing the music "market" so to speak with fluff). a greater number of talentless/visionless people making the music = more crap.

slapping a few samples together on top of some trite and pre-programmed beat in fruity loops is quite easy - and there certainly is alot of music on this level out there. putting together multi-level or complex sounds together like boards of canada, for example, takes work and talent - and music like this is rare. I am sure you'll agree.

I suppose the ratio is probably about the same with rock music. What is the ratio of, say, shitbands like hansen to, say, brilliant bands like pink floyd?

I think the elusive and golden 1% can be found if you pay attention and be honest with yourself.
