Really cool Electronic music guide

Complete Electronic music guideline I just found this and thought it was worth a post. Even though it is obvious he was pretty outspokenly biased in defining some genres, he still draws some good points and does an excellent job linking the histories of every sub-genre through its evolutionary transformations. He also spent alot of time looping songs to provide examples for each category. I just spent over an hour going thru it and have been introduced to already 5 interesting genres I previously didnt know existed. My download query is pakced to the max. Well, check it out.

There are some things I strongly disagree with in that guide but personal beliefs set aside, I still think it's the most comprehensive and historically accurate guide I have ever read. There are also many aspects of this guide that would be interesting to discuss/debate so what exactly makes it not only an insufficient perversion but in your words "a joke"----?
Some of my disagreements:
- I was surprised he left Shpongle and Infected Mushroom not only out of the descriptions for Goa/Psy Trance but also didnt even provide any examples of there works. In my book, Shpongle in not only the millenium falcon of Goa but one of the best electronic producers in the industry.
- I was never aware artists like Hybrid and BT were considered NUSKool but he belittles there Musicainship to a point where Even if you dont like the Finsihed Smyphony, Alive, HipHopPhenomena GodSpeed, or Flaming June, they still deserve to be reconized as technical and musical masterpieces.
- Even though FLorida Breaks isnt one of my favorite genres, I know eneough about it to say it was strongly misrepresented in his description. He also focusus alot of his criticism on the image rather than the music which possibly signifies a already existing grudge. Icey, Baby Anne and RickWest are satisfactory examples of Florida Breaks artists however, the illustrations he provides of there works are really shitty almost to the point where it seems he only provides them for the purpose of establishing a biased point of view.
- I would of liked to see Rabbit in the Moon somewhere but there absence is probably more of a dissapointment than a defencieny in the guide.
Im not an expert on any of this stuff but from what I know of Electronic, this guide provides not only priceless features of auditory examples, but a impressively thorough rundown of everything electronic that has cropped up since the 1950's...

the whole site is based on one guys opinion. its not put together with the proper knowledge of edm.
a site like that should be a collaboration of professional/educated resources.
most of his discussion about the various genres is just him talking shit anyway.
so that guy and his his are a fucking joke in my book.

Id say atleast 75% of the stuff is solely based on opinion but what you you mean by ?proper knowledge??
Im sure he did ateast some investigation to solidify his claims but, Electronic is not like Classical or RocknRoll where there are dozens of collaborated recourses and professional articles to reserach. And even if there was, are you saying he has to site sources to make anything he says credible?
Especially when your talking about something as subjective as music, its pretty hard to not insinuate levels of opinion but if there was nothing biased to the point where you would consider it a falsification of facts, then whether or not the guide portrayed a significant level of proper knowledge is a pretty abstract statement.
Im not trying to defend or argue whether or not you would consider this a good site as a while----but rather would like specific things that you found generally untrue?not for the sake of argument but for my own personal curiosity.

Shpongle is listed (and samples are provided) under ambient psy (a.k.a. ambient goa, psy chillout) in downtempo section.
Infected Mushroom is psytrance (psychedelic trance), and that's where you can find it listed in the trance section.
Apparently you need to have a better look at that electronic music guide

yep your right....I guess I was looking for them in the wrong section. I always thought Shpongle to be classic Goa/psy rather than a psy spinoff--I learn something new everyday.

why should anyone listen to a guy that has a negative opinion about 90% of the contents of his own site?
basically this guy is just trying to tell people whats good any whats not based on his personal opinion.

I think you're taking the author's comments a little too seriously. The guy basically trashes every genre except deep house, underground hip-hop, and turntablism. But it's all good, it's meant to be funny. Or maybe it was one of those "it's funny 'cause it's true" sorta things.
I thought the examples and descriptions were pretty accurate for just about everything, except some genres were broken down too much, to the point of nitpicking.

if your in it for the audio why not just listen to artist tracks, and mixes? instead of little 10 second clips.
your obviously not "REALLY into edm" if you have to refer to a shithole site like that.
everyone i have ever met and respected, who are truly a part of the scene, wouldnt think twice about taking that site seriously.

anyway, do whatever you want.
i can see how much less knowledgeable people could think that site is the holy grail of discovering new edm.
i just think its lacking and alltogether sucks ass.

You don?t have to be an expert in EDM to be really into it---I was really into EDM a week after I was originally introduced?but hardly knew a factual thing about it. That site can be used more than anything else an introduction to those whom are not fully aware of every single subgenre that has spidered from Electronic.
Quote:

Now this is by far the dumbest thing I have ever heard. How is somebody supposed to listen to tracks or artists they don?t know exist. Those loops are there to provide audio references to each category---not to actually listen too as if it was music coming from your stereo? lol Its irrational to think that randomly buying records or downloading songs can be used as an efficient means to obtain an understanding of various genres. I think your opinon of this being a shitty guideline is based on strong disagreements you have with his opinions---you have not only failed to answer my previous questions, but besides Ishkurs persoanl taste in music, you fail to cite anything else that is an EDM misrepresentation.---so let me ask some new questions that really embody the reason why I started a thread and was impressed with this guide.
DO you feel the bits and pieces of fact that were listed would be considered false by a consensus of the electronic commuty?
IS the structure of the website not effective in conveying knowledge?
Are there any artists or genres that were misplaced in there respected category?
Is the Evolutionary transitional tree inaccurate from genre to genre?
Are there any significant genres that were left out?
I persoanlly disagree with almost all of Ishkurs individual beliefs and I do understand there is alot of substance that is absent but keep in mind this is not supposed to be a articulate Encyclopedic documentary on the history of EDM. I just think its a real proactively functionable guide from a design standpoint and the placement of artists/cetegories and transitional phases each subgenre progressed from was pretty accurate in my eyes---

well i guess i misunderstood what you meant by "into". i took it as you felt as if you were well integrated into the scene, not as "you really like edm".
anyway im sure you would like to hear me argue more about the site, but im not going to. its pretty pointless because you have your opinions and i have mine.
i think that listening to mixes is one of the best ways to find out about new music. there a a few databases where you can type in a few artist you, or genres you like and it will search and find alot of artist that you may like - based on your input.
i would suggest downloading lots of mixes and finding trackilistings for them.
