AUGHGH DELL I HATE YOU
    #4907918 -

so roughly a year after I get this inspiron laptop, the headphone jack stops working. I don't know if this is because I used my headphones too much, or because of something someone else did while I wasn't looking, but I was /not/ harsh on my computer at all. All I can assume is that a wire got pushed back inside the computer, because when I shift the phones around in there, more noise comes through them. I went to a technician about this, and they said that if my warranty was up (surprise! I had a year warranty, and it was JUST UP!), that I could expect to pay close to $250 in labor, and that dell would tell me the same thing. fucking laptops.

so then, a few months later, after me putting up with having no headphones and just my crappy laptop speakers (I'm a musician and regularly make music on my computer), my computer crashes. I mean full-blown crash. first my wireless mouse stops working. I assume nothing is wrong. but then I notice that my touch-pad is also not working. the mouse is still. I decide I can just shut down and hopefully restarting will fix everything, but windows beats me to it. after two months of /not being online/, my computer says a file has corrupted. a system file. ntsf.sys or something similar. I shut down as directed, and get a blue screen of death. I thought those had gone away with windows 98, but I was wrong. I restart again. this time I get a black screen, asking me if I'd like to boot into a variety of safe modes, or the last system setting that was safe, or just start regularly. I tried all of them. nothing works. windows won't start because it's decided that it's dangerous to start. so all my files, the music I've made, my writings, etc, have been dead to me for quite some time now.

tonight, just out of curiousity, I went and tried to start the thing up again. I was actually enjoying not having a computer for a while there. after a few unsuccessful tries at starting, now the computer won't even get past the "Windows XP" loading screen. it just freezes. lovely. I decide to call dell. what do I get, but some foreign person speaking so quietly that I cannot decipher what the fuck is going on. I politely asked, "I'm sorry.. I couldn't hear you. Could you repeat yourself?" and the motherfucking girl spouts off the same sentence, as quiet and quickly as possible, for the second time. I said I couldn't hear you, dumbass. that means, speak slower and more clearly. I just hung up. I'm going to try another tech place tomorrow, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to be the most obnoxious online dell customer those 'chat representatives' have ever heard of. LIKE OMG WTF.

seriously. roughly a week after my warranty runs out this shit starts happening. who the hell expects a time bomb virus (or whatever the fuck it was) after two months of being OFFLINE!? why in the world did a system file just decide to corrupt?

seriously.

if there's any techies in the house, plz tell me if you think my files will be ok or not. that would be helpful in directing or lessening my frustration.

I recommend downloading a live linux cd & attempting to rescue your personal files. just mount the windows partition & find your files - you can upload these to a friend online (via instant messenger) and have him/her resend the files back to you once you have windows installed again. might take sometime but be patient...

you need to reformat/reinstall.

thanks bio. ugh, sometimes I hate computers. but I'm so hopelessly addicted to the internet, I don't think there's much I can do.

attempting to use linux might just piss me off more. I tried to figure out redhat once, and it just wasn't working out. I like my OS to be completely user-friendly. I should have got a mac. :P

do you have any idea what the hell might have happened? and do you think contacting dell would be a good idea, or wasted effort? if nothing else it gives me someone to vent at.. I'm sure the customer service reps love when people do that..

Yeah, we love when you do that, you know why?

because we just sit here laughing at you. No, I don't work for dell, but for another reputable computer company in their tech support division. Those people in india, they don't care about anything. If your going to vent, ask immediately to speak to a manager, and just keep saying that until they transfer you over there. Maybe then something will get done, but considering it was OOW when this happened, all they are going to do is tell you you are SOL and to enjoy your broken laptop. Sorry man.

What you can try to do though is to boot off of a windows xp cd (maybe dell gave you one?) and run a CHKDSK /R in recovery console

Once you get it up and running to fix your headphone jack I guarantee it's a loose solder joint so if you really want to fix it take it apart and re-solder all the points (prob 3) on the jack. Very easy to do if you can get to it. Just melt the solder thats already there to make a solid connection again.

Or buy a USB to headphone adapter of some sort.

It could have just been a virus that f'ed up the drivers for your hardware components. Hell, it could be a lot of things. But, If you have given into the fact that you will never see your information again, then I would say to try to format it and reinstall windows. Hope you have an XP CD.

I had the same headphone jack problem on the same computer.

I think it broke because my headphones are 1/4" so I needed an 1/8" adapter which is too long and heavy to hold itself up when plugged in.

or maybe it was all those times I walked away from the computer with the headphone cord tangled around my foot, yanking the adapter violently out of the headphone jack. who knows

thank god my warranty covered it. so a tech came to my house and installed a new motherboard.. a whole new motherboard just for a little 1/8" headphone jack. seemed a bit unneccesary but hey it was free and the tech was into the dead!

I did the same thing to my soundcard on an Inspiron 2650. I fucked it up on my part though... recording through an unbalanced/balanced cable adapter set is what did it on my end though, or maybe I have the wrong output setting from my triton...

i agree, if the thing freezes and acts clunky while booted to a LiveCD you can be rest assured that you are experiencing hardware failure.

if the LiveCD experience produces no failures after several hours of use you can be rest assured that Windows is broken and proceed as you see fit.

well, it's not like you'd have to really use linux - all you'd need to do is mount the windows partition (usually by typing mount /dev/hda as root in a terminal - /dev/hda is often the location - but if it is not, the true location can easily be found). then you'd browse to your personal files and then load up gaim instant messenger. send the files to your friend for safe keeping. reinstall windows and have your friend send the files back.

piece of cake.

knoppix mounts any found ntfs partitions -ro automagically and places a "shortcut" on the desktop.
