whole wheat substrate
    #490387 - 12/13/01 11:07 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

I was wondering if I could just pressure cook the water with the wheat instead of cooking the wheat separate and then pressure cooking. I have done the wheat seperate before and it wirked out fine. Has anyone else tried wheat before, and if so have you done it like this?
Thanks

You can... but you need to find a water to grain ratio that works out. With just about all grains, they're going to absorb water and swell. So, you need to judge how much water you'll need to add in with your jars and how much grain without making the substrate too wet or too dry. I always boil my seeds first so they absorb as much water as they can, then I just put that in the jars and don't have to mess with it. If you knew how much water to put in the jars with the uncooked grain though, that would be a lot quicker. Just a tip, too dry is better than too wet (you can always inject some more sterile water with a syringe if you have to)... you probably know that already though : ) Hopefully someone else with more experience of using this route of making substrate will post up some more info for you.
