Store bought poppy seeds.

From my understanding you can get the poppy seeds from the spice sections at your local store, and it is the papaver somniferum species that will produce opium. Please correct me if im wrong.

what i see for sale most often at stores are california poppies (Eschscholzia californica ssp. californica).

Its all good, I already looked and bought the other kind but after i planted i found out they dont produce pretty much at all.

Yes, and no at the same time. The ones in the spice section will produce the desired alkaloids but not much compared to ones bought at a shaman website. Wow this thread was from awhile ago.

Ive heard that these seeds is often non viable but i hear so many things. Danish flag was breedet for seed and not alkaloid production but is actually very high in alkaloids.

i got about 50% to germinate with regular McCormick poppy seeds that were in my mothers cupboard for a few years. I put them in a damp paper towel, then forgot about them. So thats a 100% mortality rate!! but, don't be discouraged by my stupidity.

I can easily get them to sprout in the hundreds(although most don't survive), but down here in the south all I can get for pods are the size of 00 buckshot. It's the heat I'm told.



I hear they grow great up north, though.

You arn't supposed to put poppy seeds in a paper towel. The tap root is to weak to be handled you have better chances if you loosen up some soild, spread some seed around and water them.

i did that just to germinate them, to see if they were viable. now the rest were placed around the edge of the yard and we will see how well it works out this spring.

Its incredible but supermarket popyseeds are the viable seeds of the very same strains of poppy used for opium production.

Ekstaza, you really should work your soil! Rake, weed it, aerate the soil and perhaps fertilize it a bit. If they can grow in the tropics they ought to grow in the US south if the soil is well-prepared.

You can consider enriching the soil with alot of bagged garden soil, considering a few square meters of soil yield a LOT of poppyheads.
