Learning Life's Lessons

I think we all have experienced, multiple times, the realization that a lot of what we heard when we were younger, from our parents or a trusted adult, was good advice. Often we didn't heed it at the time, and usually we didn't have the capacity to really understand it at the time. Growing up, going through the days and the lessons we all go through, we re-learn, sometimes painfully and usually through hard work, the lessons that our parents (or trusted adults, if your parents weren't so great) tried to instill in us.
The question I pose to you all is - If you had to pick just ONE realization/understanding/lesson/bit of wisdom that you know now, that you didn't grasp at some younger age, what would that one bit of wisdom be, and why.

work ethics...
i ended up getting some good design jobs without any school thanks to knowing the right people, but once i screwed those up they were gone and i was on my ass.
i really get into my work when i'm there, it's just a matter of getting me to that point.

Ooh that's a good question. I don't think I could single out any one lesson, as each are equally important. But if I had to pick one I would say it would be to treat everyone with love, respect, kindness and acceptance. No matter how much they piss you off. Though I don't always do this, I have learned that it will get you much farther in any relationship.

Where we lived there was a road with trees on the side, and lots and lots of ant colonies. We used to go and watch the ants work and fights each other and basically just get on with their lives.
It was his gentle way of telling me how like we are the ants. How small and insignificant. How meaningless their fighting within the same species seems. How Human society is structured almost like the one of the ants (at least in modern times). I think those trips to watch the ants has teached me a lot more than mere words could do. It gave me a greater perspective on us humans, enabling me to see us from above like we watched the ants if you will. (Without any psychedelics)
I didn't grasp it then, of course, but it stuck in me, and I have internalized this far more than I could any words. It was a great way of telling me something, and at the same time letting me experience it myself, and learn from that so I didn't have to find out about it myself afterwards. Thanks dad.
