Olympic Peninsula Mushroom Nightmare
    #4827509 -

Hey to everybody,
I'm old , 48 injured and out of work until I'm healed up.I thought it would be fun to learn something about mushrooms. I grew up out here (between Dry Creek and Joyce) in Washington state.I never paid any attention to mushrooms and couldn't identify any except chanterelles which we sold to the grocery stores when we were kids,Shaggy manes because you cant mistake em and liberty caps which were very popular in our teens. Its hard to believe I never looked at the ground before. So basically if it isn't growing out of a cow-pie, in 6 inches of dead leaf compost or shaped like a big white hairy penis I have no clue what the hell it is.
So off I go stomping through the tooley's(I live in the tooleys)Dragging home ninety million different kinds of mushrooms from just the back yard. I swear to god not a single one can be found in "Mushrooms Demystified".Wheres the classification for translucent or clear mushrooms in the index? We have some of those.Every tall skinny mushroom I see looks like a liberty cap.Its been about 25 years since I looked for one or spent the evening laughing at and taking pictures of my dresser drawers. They cant all be liberty caps,Christ you couldn't spit without landing on one if that was the case. Here is a small sampling of different mushrooms I found just today down by the creek behind the house.I'm leaving out the wavy wood ones of all colors and thickness. How the hell does anyone get a handle on learning to identify these when there are so many?

Welcome to the Shroomery.

Try going out on a fungi foray with a local mycologist, you'll learn a lot quicker than by just following a book.

If you want to identify for mycolocial sake, read some mush identifier books.  If you want to take a trip, study your area, which if you are in the pac. n. west, there are some goods to be had.
Just look for the ones which are interesting and nothing less. :crazy2:

Mushrooms Demystified is a great book and can help
you ID lots of mushrooms.

The one thing I found is that you def have to have
spore prints in some cases to properly identify, but
short of that...it provides an easy 'choose your own
adventure' type of process for ID'ing mushrooms by
asking you progressive questions about the phenotype.

if you are having a hard time ID'ing things...try the
mushroom hunting forum, there's lots of heads in there
that can help.
