Did you start the plants from seeds?
I experienced that it is rather difficult to do this.
If you did, then please give me some info about how to do it.

Thx, Tengu

Hi dumlovesyou,

What Schultes & Hofmann have to say about Calea zacatechichi in "The botany and chemistry of hallucinogens":

"...Crushed dried leaves are infused in water, and the resulting tea is imbibed slowly, after which the native lies down in a quiet place and smokes a cigarette of the dired leaves of the same plant. The Indian knows that he has taken a large enough dose when a sense of repose and drowsiness is experienced and when he hears his own heart and pulse beats. The Chontal medicine men, who assert that this plant is capable of "clarifying the senses", call it thle-pelakano or "leaf of god"..."

There was an alcaloid found, but there is still a lot of controversy if this plant represents a real hallucinogen. It is believed to induce dreams...

Hi Tengu and jonnyshaggs420,

I startedfrom seed. I bought from some Internet provider a small amount of dried flowers, from which I hoped to get also seed... From 20 very tiny seed y got 2 plants, from which one died, and the other is the one of the photo. My experience shows that the plant likes it very humid and with a lot of light. I'm not sure how she reacts to direct sun...

Reproducable from cutting???

I could be wrong but I think a lot of plants can be done this way. I know it works for pot, roses, salvia, geraniums, etc, etc. I think to try it the final cut must be made at a node (where leaf stem branch off from the main stem) and use a cloning gel .

The cool thing about propagating plants this way is that the genetics in the 'mother' and clones is identical.

I'm sure you should be able to grow that plant from cuttings.Nearly all woody plants can be grown that way. Some plant species root a lot easier than others, but nearly all can be done.
Try this and see if it works: Cut a small piece off at the node(as mentioned before).Using a very sharp blade, make a clean cut at about a 45* degree angle (a dull blade tends to cause the cut to "seal up" keeping nutrients from getting to the plant).Fill a small bucket ( a jar would probably work) up with about 6" of water.Get a small piece of styrofoam, poke a hole in it,and stick the stem of the plant through it.Place this in the water so the leaves (you just want a few leaves, too many may slow the process down)are up,out of the water, and the cut part of the stem is barely in the water. You don't want too much of the stem in the water,it may cause rot to set in.Of course the piece of styrofoam must be large enough to float the plant. After the roots have formed, you 'll need to break the styrofoam from the plant.Don't pull the plant through the hole,it'll damage the tender roots. Then plant it in some type of loose growing medium.I would change the water in the bucket every 2 or 3 days.Maybe add just a tiny amount of plant food to the water, also.
I've done this with several plants and it worked.Tried it on buddleias (butterfly bush) this year, and had about 80% success.
This may not work for your species. Some plants have to be rooted under glass with high humidity and warm temps, some in sand, some misted, some will root in fuckin' asphalt ( I once found a baby pot plant growing in a crack in the asphalt),it all depends on the type off plant.
I figured you could give it a shot (just try a couple of cuttings,I wouldn't want you to butcher your plant : ).
The plant you have may also root from the root itself. You'll have to observe it and see if it sends up any sucker plants around the base (red raspberries do this). If so you'll have all the extra plants you 'll want.
You could also try rooting in peat pellets.Just make sure you use a rooting gel (as suggested before). This technique sometimes works better if the cutting is kept in a terrerium,to keep the humidity up.
That's a nice looking plant. If it flowers, take us some photos,I'd love to see it.

Hi doo & D_Tox,

thanks a lot for the info. The try I gave didn't work, but because I
had not your info ;) I took too thin cuttings that where not at the
node. I still have a question, how long should the branches be? They are quiet
long, and I was wondering if it would be ok to cut them into a reasonably
length.

I'll take a chance with the styrofoam and use a diluted Ingestad-Solution as a
slightly nutritive medium. I could also put into the medium some auxines to
enhance rooting (it would be then be the same as the rooting-gel).

Although the plant has an outlasting organ, which it needs for the dry season in
Mexico, it doesn't produce sucker plants. Life could be so easy then... It
rather produces new shoots from this outlasting organ (looks like a big root in
the form of a carrot).

I'll keep you informed, and if it works, I would be glad to spread this species,
and send therefore to whoever whants a cutting :)

You can grow them from seed using a mix of sand and manure... the seeds damp off or whatever really easy and I have had a hard time getting them to grow on anything other than sand and dung. Not a bad herb to have around : )

I used also a soil rich in sand, and only a few of them survived...
I managed now to get some cuttings to root. So probably this is a better way to spread them...

I'll vouche for that : ) growing them from seed isn't anywhere near as easy as taking cuttings
