the shroomery S&P forum split: an advancement in consciousness
    #4781711 -

i think this forum split can be acknowledged as a turning point in human consciousness.  the rational people at the shroomery have finally stood up and said to the "spiritualists" that theyre not going to pander to them any more.

if you can't accept certain things, such as the fact that god is a meaningless concept, or that unicorns do not exist...you can shove it(i mean, go to your own forum) this forum split acknowledges that the real world is for the big boys, those not afraid to change their ideas when presented with truth.

to get all trippy about the forum split...you can see how it fits in so nicely with what else is going on in the world at the moment.  you have a western world who wants to move forward with rationality and tell the irrational to go screw themselves.  but the irrational come back with bombs strapped to them.  the rational must, as some point, say "weve had enough of this bullshit.  your irrationality is a threat to my own life, and i must kill you in self defense."

big things like that start in places like the shroomery, where we've just seen the forum split.  people who want to progress have said "get out" to those who want to stay stuck in the past.

its also interesting to see how technology is such an integral part of this shift in technology.  previously, when the rational wanted to progress, they were burnt at the stake, like gallelio.  but now, with computers, we can do things and not be threatened so directly by others.

here's to progress

Interesting post. :mushroom2:

Those within delusion will seperate themselves from that which would cure them of their delusion, instead of openly embracing the challenging new perspectives that would serve to develop them and their spirituality.

Those on a path of continous seeking and self-development who realize the mechanics of their path and their destination will continue to advance in understanding and realization, as well as continuing to heighten their awareness and experience of life. That is true spirituality, realizing and being the spirit, and it certainly isn't possible without the full embrace of a thirst for knowledge and understanding (philosophy? :smirk:), as well as challenge and the prospect of new perspectives and new variables to take into consideration.

We should consider ourselves lucky that we are merely segregated from an indirectly experienced community that exists as abstraction as compared to a physical death as a result of creative torture by ignorant, radical fundamentalists.

It was really both sides which were being irrational. What I saw was a strata of personalities within the S&P forum. Two, very vocal groups were "attacking" each other. These two groups were comprised of the fundamentalist, polar extremes of the strata, while the lurkers, indifferent, and fenceriders piped up as filler.

The S&P that the (probably) majority of the posters enjoyed reading and posting on was split up because two minority groups needed their own specialization.

Now we have installed a (mentally) handicap access ramp into the S&P forum.

now that the irrational are separated out, you will see some serious discussion get going. give me a couple of days im bogged down with schoolwork at the moment.

honestly, the whole spirituality thing was what was holding me back from wanting to post in S&P. i would love to share rational philosophy people, but not just anybody. i want to share it with people who aren't opposed to rationality. people who wont be like "everybody is right, now we can all just get along, yay!"

and now that those people have their own haunt, i can say what i want without having to deal with the most rediculous responses. ill recieve responses from people who want to understand but dont have enough information to do so.

learning only takes place when someone is ready and willing.

"The rational mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master." - Ram Dass

Your thinking is black and white, your understanding about GOD (concept OR Reality), nil. Materialistic 'thinking' about the world is not philosophy - it is but one very limited function. "Spiritualists" were late 18th and early 19th century mediums, most of whom conducted bogus seances. My guess is that the archaic word 'spirit' (today's 'consciousness') only holds one of several meanings for you. Unicorns belong to a fabulous bestiary that was popular during the Middle Ages and they held significant symbolic meaning at that time (point of interest in psycho-history). You seem to dismiss before you have even begun to penetrate a phenomenon for meaning. This is shallow, philosophy is deep.

Yeah, im sure now that you have sorted out those "people whom have experienced a highly profound and life changing event which is unexplainable to them", these philo 101 debates that will be abundant here , which 64% of all posts will be comprised of quotes, should be just sooooooooooo deep.

I rarely seen anything related to philosophy(in the scholastic sense) in here.
How often does anyone discuss Crito or the works of Democritus?

One need not discuss philosophers to discuss philosophy. I have seen Nietzche brought up here before, though, and I have brought up the ideas of social theorists like Emile Durkheim before.

What is wrong with referencing another man's words if they are insightful and relevant to the discussion? Throughout history, philosophy has evolved by philosophers' criticism of each others thought.

sadly, i suppose that may happen. i didn't think of it before you said it.

but when i said that i wanted to start posting about philosophy, i meant that i will start to challenge irrational ideas more agressively. starting a debate of the quotes is just stupid.

i see your post as a display of arrogance. people come from all sorts of experiential backrounds and what seems rational to one person may seem completely irrational to another person. it's quite possible that if you had had the same life experiences of the person who ideas you so quicly dismiss as irrational you would believe the same things. for example

if you can't accept certain things, such as the fact that god is a meaningless concept

God is a concept that has meaning to many people. that is a fact. sure you can present an argument saying its a meaningless concept but to use that an example of a defining feature of rationality is in itself irrational.

Basically, what i meant, was that philosophy is not a new frontier. Pretty much every possible argument and POV of reality, and every possible theory cloaked as an answer to the big Question of WHY, has been discussed. Not only discussed, but written down in great detail.

Purely debating philosophy is about the same thing as debating who is the better football team.

the sidecar of spirituality added a different dimension to the pretentious, hand-me-down opinion deuling with quotes and passages as the revolver.

come on...youre asserting that somehow "experiential backrounds" determine rationality and truth. NO! i dont feel that i need to explain that any further.

the god concept does not have meaning to anyone, because of the fact that it is a meaningless concept. people who go around telling themselves that god exists are just exhibiting their mental illness.

this whole "but it has meaning to me" thing has to stop! meaning to one person or another is so rediculous. concepts have objectively defined meanings that individuals either accept and work with or deny(hence raising their level of cognitive dissonance).

and i never said that acceptance of the non-existence of god is a defining feature of rationality. i merely said that it is one conclusion gained through a rational though process.
