Old timers straw tek! 1

I was wondering if some of you would share your success/failure stories using this tek. I've never grown using straw before. Also, is there a better straw tek out there than Old Timers? And do you think a colonized jar of rye grains would work as an innoculant or would it be to wet? Thanks for your posts!!! bassplayer74

Here is a link to some compiled teks that bluethumbs put together and posted a while back. I believe this is a version of the "old timers" tek. In my humble opinion this is probably the most comprehensive and well written piece I have seen on these boards. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=466067&fpart=1

Yes. I recommend it best fukin tek around. as far as your grains, yes they will work for spawn of course. But a chopped pf cake works 10 times better; thats why I love the oldtimer straw tek

i've used it several times with good results. the key is the finely powdered pf cake, which gives literally thousands of points of growth after inoculation. here's a pic of it in action...

no, i can't take the credit for that, that pic was posted originally at mycotopia by the author of the tek, our friend OldTimer. he turned me onto the whole idea of grinding cakes to spawn straw.

The straw in this pic does not look to have been shredded....has anyone had success using this tek and not shredding it first? I know old timer says to shred it but it just doesnt look shredded to me....maybe I'm wrong.... bassplayer74

na you don't really have to shred the straw... altho it's usefull... those big pieces of straw sticking out "could" contaminate ect. ect. ect....another advantage that shredded straw gives you is that the shredded straw has a more exposed surface area for the mycelium to colonize(easier for it to get to the nutrients).... but no, you don't have to shred it up peace

And I found that it is an EXCELLENT way to lay out a regular casing, grind a few cakes, lay them out in your trays... nice &. even.. you dont even have to touch the cakes, just 'grind & pour', they recover so fast that within two days it will be pulling away from the sides. OT is the sheiot!

Thanks for all your posts...I will be innoculating my first jars to use on the old timers straw tek this week. I already have PF classic strain syringes in hand. I'm just waiting for my pressure cooker to get here. I will keep all posted with my progress along the way with pics. If there is anybody else doing this tek, please let me know how its going and maybe a pic or two showing how you set it all up. Also any other opinions on anything to do with this tek that has not been mentioned yet would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has had any failures with this tek, please make known so myself and others can avoid these mistakes. Thanks again! bassplayer74

Has anyone tried using one of the various whole brown rice recipies? i.e. Brown's Brown Rice recipie. AFOAF is wondering if their are any downsides to whole rice and if it would chop up fine.

The coolest set-up that I have ever seen involved useing pasterized straw and rye for spawn. Some say that straw sucks, I STRONGLY DISAGREE. The strongest 'shrooms that this ole hippie has ever had were grown on pasterized straw with NO CASEING! The strain at issue was the main PF strain as well. They were sooooo strong that eating ONE WET 'shroom produced intense visuals for me and all of my friends that eat one as well. I mean it was fucken unreal. Straw is HIGHLY recomended here. Anyone that dis'es straw teks is either pushing a dis-information campaign or they have never sampled such fruits!

i dont think any one has mentioned this but you can also grind colonized grains in place of the cakes, for those who chucked their halfpints.

grinding grain will quickly expose uncolonized material which will easily contam. that's why we use fully colonized pf cakes, the rice is already ground up and fully colonized so when we grind the cakes, no material is exposed for contam, just plain vermiculite.
