the point of agar is?
    #466984 - 11/22/01 09:19 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

Maybe I don't get it but why would someone want to use agar? It seems like a hassel. Wouldn't cloning just be easier if you wanted to get a potent strain going? Am I missing something, or rather what am I missing?

Strain isolations, multi-spore innoculations, culture storing.

Many reasons for agar, 1st is single strain isolation unlike a spore syringe where you might or might not get a good vigorus strain, with agar you can choose the most rhiz pieces and use them for inoculation.

It seems like a hassel. Wouldn't cloning just be easier if you wanted to get a potent strain going?

Yes and no if you clone using a syringe you can still get contams and not see them until you inoculate and lose those jars.

With agar you isolate the most rhiz and if you have contams you will see them on your agar(most of the time) before you inoc. And would of course elect to not use the petri.

Am I missing something, or rather what am I missing?

I don't know. Everyone finds a nitch maybe it's a syringe and BRF & Verm.
Or agar and rye.

There are ways around agar. I've found a couple myself. Sure they are easy to work with(plates) ,but I've found multispore on rice to be just as effective(for me) as agar plates. I also has to do(I think)with what sort of equipment one has on hand.
