Ok guys. I have decided to grow my own mushrooms but need a little know how. i have 1/2 pint jars but am not too familiar with colonization. what do i put in the jars? brown rice powdeR? vermiculite? then do i take the spore syringe and just let it drip on the contents? or is there a way to do it contaminate free. how much do i fill the jars up with brown rice etc. how long do i let the jars colonize? i am planning on growing in either a large fish tank or a large plastic container but the plastic containers arent easy to find. anyone know where to find them? can someone pls walk me thru the colonization process it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Do some reading. fanaticus.com is a good place to start. You can find a rubbermaid container at K-Mart.

Yeah there are lots of teks around here, its a lot to explain in depth in a post. You want pf tek which is on this site somewhere. A tank would work but i feel plastic would be better get them at any 'mart' store wallmart, kmart or any other store like that

just make sure the light doesn't generate heat, some prefer external light sources if convinient

you dont need any light source as long as there is a window in the room. If you can look down though the window in the lid and seed your cakes then you have enough light

That is true, as loong is its not darkish in there. If you feel like it there are many bulbs out there made for growing, like plant light or gro-lux. These are found at places like wallmart or home depot. They apparently respond best to lights in the blue end of the spectrum.

Very little light is required... If you can see your cakes even slightly... there is enough light.

I think in your case, you may needs a light if the closet is pitch black. Your terrarium should be sealed totally to maintain humidity, some people including myself like to put a small hole in the bottom, right above the perlite if casing or above any collected water if using cakes. This allows some co2, which is heavier than air to escape, but some dead air pockets will stil be there so you should fan it out like 2x a day ( morning and night usually) just by taking off the top and using a book or something to fan it out a little. I hope there are no english teachers reading this cause that was a mean run-on :) Lastly, if casing which i assume you are not yet, or maybe you are, perlite is good for keeping the tank at an ideal humidity level if layed in a 1/2 inch or so layer on the full bottom of the tank. I've never heard of people using vermiculite this way, although im sure people do, but then again im somewhat of a newbie myself. Vermiculite is perfect for most substrates such as the 50/50 tek or pf tek to name a few. Hope I helped
