Well i have to admit, fine verm colonizes quicker then thick stuff. I bought two diff brands at lowes one is fine and dark in color, thje other is about 20 times the size of the fine and tan in color. Also as for ur jars not growing, patience sometime spores take a week to germinate. I've had some germinate over nite. Ya just never know.

Maybe I can help

Vermiculite size is a matter of preference.  It's never been shown (or proven) that one size is better than another.  Some say that fine verm holds more water, some say chunky verm provides more air???

Point is, the vermiculite probably isn't the reason why you don't see colonization.

When did you inoculate?
What temperature are you incubating?
What ratio of water/verm/and water did you use?

Simple questions, but they should be asked.

That fine verm clumps up too much. When I used BRF cakes waaay back in the day in amsterdam, I started with the fine, then moved up to coarse. Had better results with the coarse. Then again, I had better results with WBS coated with a touch of BRF too. Just a touch though.

1 cup water 1 cup BRF and 2 cups of verm, Innoculated about a week ago, the day after i saw a tiny white mycellium spec but it hasn't grown and nothing else has happened to the cakes. I am going to assume its my incubation temp. But since I have no idea how to make a damn incubator I'm kind of stuck.

Can you show me a good link for incubation construction maybe? I'm wanting to make a crap load more cakes, I've got lots of spores left.

Here's mine, It's below the fruiting chamber.

Edit: Hah, forgot to tell you how to build it, huh? Two sterilite containers I got at wallmart. Spraypainted with Krylon Fusion(tm) plastic spraypaint. Dried. Cut a hole in one JUST RIGHT with my knockoff Dremel. First one is filled with water, and a submersible fish tank heater is inserted in there. Shitloads of plumber's goop(tm) to seal up the hole where I have access to the temp control. Nested the other container right up against the water, with minimal airspace allowed. More shitloads of plumbers goop. Recognize.

mycelium doesn't actualy colonize the verm,it just grows through it.so think about texture of the verm your using,i think larger chunks would colonize faster.it's airy the mycelium doesn't have to fight it way throu, cause it's loser not so packed together.i use scoots and i thinks to fine.but i believe it can vary from bag to bag once in awhile.
