My Poor Casings
    #465657 - 11/21/01 01:45 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

My casings have like 4 or 5 medium size blotches of mycelium on them. They're being kept in a dark closet all though I do check on em every once in awhile. The thing is, they're not even in their terrarium yet and I see a few small mushrooms growing. Should I put the casings in the terrarium even though the mycelium isn't even 1/3 covering the casing layer?

i don't know what you should do... however next time you case, you should patch the first spots of mycelium that poke through the casing layer with a thin layer of fresh casing material so that you can get an even pinset and you won't have the problem of shrooms growing at completely random times

but they come from underneath the casing layer and not from the top

the light is what tells the fruits to pop out...

if you have shrooms growing from the bottom of your casing, you must be using a transparent container, cover it in ductape or somethin to block out the light. i know they come from underneath the casing layer, but when pieces of mycelium pop up and are exposed to the different environment it fucks the timing up... you want it so the mycelium that overtakes the casing layer is evenly dispersed. that is why if there are valleys in your casing layer and the mycelium comes up there before anywhere else, you should promptly cover it with fresh casing material so it will be ready at the same time as the rest of the casing...

That 1/3rd law isn't chiseled in stone. One school of thought is that you should pick these early "volunteers" and wait. It becomes a judgement call. The presence of multiple pins means, to me, they're ready for the terrarium.

Off course. You should expose casing to light when the
mycelium barely starts to pop through the casing surface, much earlyer then when 1/3 of the casing is covered.
