Ok, i am a newbie, and all the reading i have done is "dont damage the cake" blah blah blah, well i was reading about this casing method entitled "sea of shrooms" at www.sporechicks.com, anyway and they tell you to crumble the cake and i was hoping someone out there could verify this, do you actually tear the cake apart??

I wouldnt think there would be any other way to crumble the cake, other than to break it apart..
My real question is, howcome more people dont use rye grain, or other grains, birdseed etc, to increase colonization times, and yields?
Its easier, faster, and more productive from what ive seen?

cookiewhore... I think the reason more people don't use whole graines is because
You need a pressure cooker to sterilize and prepare them propely. Whole graines
can contain large amounts bacterial endospores that wont die off in the reletivaly
low tempratures of a regular pot of boiling water while BRF/Verm substrates are sterilized rather well under these conditions. Also I think that people that have cut there teeth on the MMGG of PF tek would like to stick with what works...

Hey Mike,

The casing layer acts for 4 main purposes:
1) To protect the colonized substrate from drying out
2) To provide a humid microclimate for primordia formation and developments
3) To provide a water reservoirfor the maturing mushrooms
4) To support the growth of fructification enchancing microorganisms

Basically when you tear apart a cake to put into a casing, the mycelium can re-establish itself stronger due to the favorable conditons it is living in, underneath the casing, (and in an incubator). Thus, creates a larger surface area for the fruiting phase, and is more healthy instead of being right in the middle of a terrarium. Keep the rH @ 95% for the first primordia development phase, and keep casing moist with a fine mist. Once the pinheads have reached a few millimeters in diameter, you want to reduce the rH to approx. 85%...

Also if your going to case, Id reccomend buying coco coir, its a great casing material... You can really read the moisture content!
