cleaning after contamination
    #463559 - 11/19/01 03:19 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

I heard after you get a contaminate or r done with your jars you have to soak them for 24 hours in a mixture of bleach and water. what is the precent bleach to water? instead of doing that can you just put it in a pc for a while at a high temp? my pc goes up to 400 degrees.

if you have a pc all you have to do is wash the jars out and fill with substrate and sterilize. The pc will kill anything that is in there; at least in dudes experience that is.

just wash them with soap and water. then wash them again before you make your next batch.

but if you want to go through the hassle of firing up your pcooker just to clean your jars, go for it(dont go to 400 though. normal 15 lbs is overkill enough).
Wayyy overkill if you ask me though...

hell no. if your jars are contam and if mycellium already started growing then yes you do want new substrate. you cant just PC it to kill the crap and inject new spores. well, you probably could but bacteria and molds eat up nutrients pretty fast and although it probably would work it would be much better if you made new substrate. and as for your first inquiry about bleach you can NEVER bleach you substrate. if you wanted to soak the whole contaminated jar with substrate in a bleach soluion your nuts. the bleach would never get out and kill every spore you ever put or will put in there. just mix up some new jars and sterilize a lil better.

Just mix 10% bleach, Soak for six to twelve hours. No more than 24 hours or it will leave residue that is hard to clean.
Rinse out bleach verry well, Done.
