Shroomer, you seem to be waiting for someone to say "black mold is ok"... There are about 4 types of black mold listed in TMC. Some are listed as non-toxic, some are very dangerous. Nobody can positively diagnose it for you without seeing it, so go get the book.

I found my copy in a head shop for $29.95... I'm sure you could find it online too.

I agree. If you can't find it at a local Barnes & Noble, you can order it from Amazon.com. Either way, its a $30 investment that will prove to be very beneficial.

For us Canadians, it's listed at 39.95 online at chapters.ca, 10% less if you belong to their 'club'.

What about contams that can directly attack the mushroom without affecting the cake. Is cobweb the only nasty that will skip the cake and go straight to the fruit? Is it worth tossing a cake that had one cobwebbed fruit (all black in the middle.)

I'd like to bring up the subject about contams during drying or storage. Will desiccant in drying and storage eliminate the chance for these?
