light, fluttery feeling in my chest
    #4633624 - 09/08/05 01:40 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I'm not even sure if "fluttery" is a word. But if it is, thats what I feel right around where my heart is, sometimes if I am staying up really late, or have woken up earlier than usual, or having a cold shower or something like that. "light" is also a really good word to describe it, but I dont know why, thats just the feeling I get.

It is in no way painful, and only feels slightly uncomfortable for a few seconds, but makes me wonder whether I should see a doctor. I also get slight chest pains on rare occasion, generally where my heart is.

I'm only 19, and it's not like I have abused any particular substance too hard, but I do like a good drink and a smoke (weed, not tobacco). I have really only noticed it in the last year or so. Hope I don't have a weak heart or something. I am otherwise a fairly healthy person (I mean I have no particular conditions that I know of... I live on a pretty shit diet, though.)

I have to go check up with a doc a few months from now, thinking I might ask then. This doesnt happen to happen to anyone else?

I would certainly see a doctor about it. You should probably get an ultrasound done on your heart as well as an ECG.

I was born with a heart-murmur and had known that my whole life, so when I was 20 and started to experience symptoms like yours I went straight to my doc about it. I was getting that strange "fluttery" feeling in my chest, as well as palpitations (being able to "feel" your heart pounding for no reason) and skipped-beats (you can DEFINITELY feel when that happens!!!).

After the ultrasound/ECG I was much less concerned. Turned out that my murmur had finally grown out (yay!) and that I had a benign arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). My doc said it was something a lot of people in their early 20's get, that it was nothing to worry about, and that it would last 4-5 years. It's been 4 years now, and while it still happens (the skipped beats) from time to time it is not very often at all anymore (and hey, I'm still alive!).

You will be able to notice it MOST when you are resting, especially in bed. When the heart pumps at more than 70 bpm or so, the faster heartbeat will "cover up" the arrhythmia so you won't feel it at all (and it won't show up on a ECG). When you are resting is when the missed-beats and fluttering will occur most, because your heartbeat is slower.

Definitely see a doc if you are having any weird feelings in your heart. Hopefully it's something benign...but you don't want to risk it. You only get one heart.

I definitely get that feeling some nights lying in bed, I didn't mention it because it hasn't happened in a while, but it is just like you describe.

don't think it will be an immediate problem if I spend my weekend socialising, drinking (not too much), and smoking the herb? (too much)

I doubt it will be a problem, but don't take my word for it

I think if it was anything serious you would be experiencing a lot of other symptoms: dizzyness, tiredness, weakness, fainting, sweating, confusion, all kinds of other things. I'm thinking you just have the same kind of arrhythmia that I do.

I've done most of my drinking, drugs, and partying in the years since I found out I had this arrhythmia, and haven't had any problems at all.

Hey bud, that was very informative.

I have had and been having the exact symptoms you've talked about...to a tea. And for a few years now.

You sure do know when it skips a beat, hey. I have never went to the doctor for it though. When this was all new to me, there was one time when it scared me badly and my heart was racing. I ended up in the emergency room and they took an ECG, while my heart was beating insanely fast. And I always wondered why they didn't find anything.

I've had people try to sell me on the idea that it's only anxiety. But I don't have anxiety, unless I smoke lots of marijuana. I get those fluttering/light chest feelings a lot when I'm rested or like buddy said above, sometimes when I get into the shower or something. The feeling that is most uncomfortable is when it skips a beat though, but I've learned to deal with it.

Maybe I should make an actual appointment and get it checked out?

It certainly wouldn't hurt! At least then you'd know for sure that there's nothing wrong.

My doc did say that this thing was "quite common". I got the idea that many people never actually seek medical advice about it. While it SURE DOES feel "wrong" whenever it happens...I certainly don't feel generally ill or anything like that...so I can see how people might just ignore it.

I went mainly because I had a history of heart murmurs and wanted to make sure everything was OK. My parents drilled it into me pretty early that I should pay special attention to my heart and what it was telling me. I had a VERY good friend who died when we were both just 7 years old. He died from a massive heart-attack, due to his own heart-murmur. I think it scared the shit out of me for quite a few years.

I always get the sensation that my heart is skipping a beat. I get

slightly short of breath right afterwards. Kind of like I need to

yawn. I don't know if you can even feel your heart skipping a beat so

I haven't been too worried about it. I'm still alive.

When I went and got my murmur checked out the cardiologist informed me that there's no nerves in or around the heart that would allow you to feel an actual fluttering/palpatation/murmur/regurge.. but myself and others here would disagree I'm sure.

That honestly makes no sense. But crazy. I wonder if that's true.

I'll get my doctor to go into detail about this when I go.

It is true - just like in your brain there are no pain receptors in your heart.

However you can feel pain indirectly from your heart...just like you can get a headache even though your brain can't feel pain.

Every time your heart beats it sends shockwaves through your chest cavity. I was told that these are always noticable, in just about everyone...but that because they're always there most people just don't notice them! When you have a skipped beat or something like that you instantly become aware of this thing beating away in your chest, so you start paying attention to the movement...we then call this "palpitation".

I'm gonna be another person that jumps onto this thread and says "Yes, that is exactly how I feel sometimes"

It's scary when my heart jumps a beat...Makes me hope I'm not having a heart attack

hmm that makes total sense.  Thanks

Yeah, after a long time I've pretty much learned to ignore it...but not entirely.  It's not something that effects my day to day life anymore or anything.

whoa. didn't realise it was so common. I will still get it checked out though. I smoked two cones thismorning (before going to bed) and I dont know whether it was because I was thinking about my heart so much or what, but I freaked out and felt like my heart was beating insanely hard. Had a shower and that calmed me down though

so your saying a palpatation is merely a psychological observance of your heart beating?

websters defines palpatations as an actual irregular heartbeat, not a psychological effect of ones heart skipping a beat. You see, can only feel the missed beat though, i dont feel any beats afterwards. Do we have missed beats that we dont notice?

Well in effect it is the skipped beat that "causes" the palpitations, because you wouldn't be able to feel them if it didn't occur.

I can feel my heartbeat VERY clearly for 30-90 seconds after a skipped beat. Just a general awareness of this thing twitching along in my chest. I'm pretty small, too (5'7, 125 lbs) so my small torso might make it easier for me to feel the beating.

It is possible to feel palpitations without having a skipped beat. Websters isn't always the greatest for medical/scientific/philosophy definitions..."palpitations" should mean "the sensation of a pounding or racing heart". It's not "psychological" in nature - because there is a real physical cause - but there are no pain receptors in the heart so, like a headache, the sensation is "mental".
