Fishtank heater quest.
    #463269 - 11/19/01 11:34 AM (15 years, 17 days ago)

I've got a 75w fishtank heater submerged into a glass jar full of water to provide proper temperatures for jars colonization. The jars and the fishtank heater are all inside a cardboard box (a small one), my problem is the temperature, the heater can be set to 86F max and and the water is at 86F but the air temperature inside the box only reaches 73-77F, what can be done to obtain higher temps ? I was thinking to use a plastic jar instead of glass to irradiate more heat, is there a risk for the plastic to melt ?
Thanks.

Peace,
MAIA

a water pump and a radiator works, or better insulation in your container..

and its radiate not irradiate... you do not want to irradiate them, else you would have little success :P

Good idea, thanks!
BTW, a learned english watching TV but radiate and irradiate means allmost the same, when you say that i don't want to irradiate, i really want... with heat :P, anyway my diccionaire could be wrong.

MAIA, in my experience using something like a plastic container like a fruiting chamber is best for incubation to insulate the container from heat loss....also keeps humidity in if your using filter discs...I also use fish tank heaters...one is a 50 watt and in a large container I can keep the temp. controlled up to 85F.

oh yes, and I feel that a glass container for the heater itself is the best at keeping things warm...also, most importantly, the size of the heater container will be a determining factor, the more water you have heated-the higher the temperature in the chamber---although it takes up more space---

Additionally to what everyone else wrote:

The best way to get a high temperature is to have an open water container. The bigger the contact surface of air and water is, the better. If the container is open, then the water is allowed to evaporate. Water vapour is distributed automatically, as a consequence of molecular diffusion, in the chamber. The water vapour transports then the heat, distributing it very good. Besides heat is much better transported by humid air than by dry air.

One of the problems is a very high himidity, which in turn allows contaminants or algae to grow inside the chamber.

The problem of a closed container, or such one that has a small contact surface between water and air, is that the most heat is transported through heat diffusion. Heat diffusion is not as effective, getting near the container a much higher temperature than at the furthest point (differences of up to 5 C to 8 C can be found in a 50 L container).
BTW heat diffsion goes through the boundary area of the container, therfore big water containers will heat up your chamber much better than small ones although they have the same temperature.

p.d. Glass transports much better heat than plastic, therefore your container should be made of glass or even much better of a metall (like aluminium or copper, steal isn't as good, but still better than glass).
