New Grower Questions

Alright, bear with me because I'm a new cultivator and I have some questions: 1. What is perlite and should I be using it. I'm going according to the guide they have at the shroomery.com for growing P.Cubensis and it says nothing about perlite. 2. After I innoculate, am I supposed to cover up the innoculation holes with tape or something? 3. A few of my cakes developed some greenish/bluish spots after the mycelium was established. Is this contamination or just a bruising of the cake. If it is contamination, can I do something about it or should I just throw the stuff out. 4. The one cake I did get to take hold and avoid contamination did sprout mushrooms, but they have a large amount of fluffy mycelium around the base of them. What does this mean about the conditions of my terrarium. It is too moist? Not moist enough? Too hot, cold, light, dark? Help me, oh mushroom gurus. thanks a bunch. DOONEY

1. Perlite is a volcanic gravel that keeps lots of water and helps keep a high level of humidity, you would want this if you're a newbie. 2. Yeah, tape is fine, you can also use foil. 3. If it's green and it is growing ON TOP of the mycelium it's surely contam, I would suggest you throw it out. 4. That usually means that humidity is not high enough, that's why people use perlite. another question, when I pick the mushrooms from the cake, should I rip them off at the base or should I cut them partway up the stalk with a knife or scissors?

Hello dooney, I think the blueiing is just a bruise, that means you have potent mycelium, dont throw it out like you were told previously.
