Cedar and other soft woods (soft woods are any wood from an evergreen type tree) have too many resins that can inhibit growth. PF style jars with grain and verm but no wood work nicely or jars of whole grain can be used if you are confident about not having any contams. The colonized grain can be used to spawn wood. I find that old wood, the kind you would use to start a fire, works best even if it is a soft wood.
