Sawdust as Substrate?

Does anyone out there have any experience using sawdust as a substrate? Can a substrate of all sawdust be used or would it help to make it 50/50 with verm to prevent packing of the substrate? Keep in mind this is for Cubensis, Azures, and yes Shitaki(sp?)

Stamets says a sawdust spawn can be used for Lentinus edodes, and Flammulina velutipes.
I don't think sawdust would work with cubensis as it does not have the proper chemicals to digest wood into a useable nutrient..I could be wrong though.
