"Right" vs. "Happy"

I spent the first 29 years of my life struggling to discover the "rules" so that I could live correctly. I often wondered why I wasn't happy, but did not consider happiness a worthy pursuit.
After burning out on my perfectionist lifestyle, I began to consider the possibility that there were no rules. This revolutionary idea propelled me into making some BIG changes in my life.
Thus far, making choices based on happiness potential has been quite successful for me. I would add that I still believe it is important to consider the impact of my current choices on FUTURE happiness.
Which guides your life more? Or is there another value which has more influence on you than either of the choices I considered?

expect another 29 years at least of changing your mind very healthy. we are all wrong that is why it is so mental. I mean we are all right except when it gets too stiff.

"After burning out on my perfectionist lifestyle, I began to consider the possibility that there were no rules."
The "rules" were reinforced by your parents, teachers, friends, and society. They state that in order to be respected, one must be a success. Define success. Well that could cover a lot of ground depending on your parents, friends, and circumstances. In gangland, success might be getting back your little piece of drug dealing turf by killing the competition. In your case as with most people, it means becoming educated, getting a good job, making money, retiring and living the good life.
The problem comes in when people make career decisions based on money or other people's expectations rather than doing what they really enjoy or are truly good at.
Happiness at work is something many people sorely lack. Granted, a McJob probably will never bring happiness. Still, many people follow the money rather than following their heart.

I spent the first 29 years of my life struggling to bend the rules.

I have spent the last 12 years just ignoring the rules... I am not a rebel...I am just apathetic...

'Rightness' and happiness are nearly synonymous to me. What seems 'right' to myself is what causes and spreads happiness.

Yeah I tend to look at both right and happy when I make a decision. I honestly couldn't tell you which one I lean toward more, but if I had to guess I would say right. I think being happy is up to me, and choosing "right" can only further increase that happy.

This gets confusing when you have your best friends girlfriend sleeping in the bed next to you. Do you do what's right or what will make you happy? =)

Right vs. happy is a false dilemna.
First you follow societal rules; then you break the rules; then you follow a higher set of rules.
You are only on step 2. Someday you will acknowledge step 3.

Hell man, I'd honestly like to say that I follow my own higher set of rules. Perhaps not completely, but this is how I percieve my actions.

In step 4, you once again follow no rules, but it is different than step 2. There IS a natural progression and one cannot "skip" ahead.

Swami, what you are saying is sounding pretty interesting to me.
Care to elaborate a little?

It is interesting to you in that you sense the truth of it.
No, I will not elaborate. Following another's footsteps is not the path. You are your own teacher and THAT is my highest teaching.
