Apologizing and excuse-making
    #4419535 -

This form of make-believe or apologizing occurs here on such a regular basis that I strongly suspect man's ability to overcome superstition or even challenge his own ingrained picture of the world even in the face of overwhelming evidence (or the total lack of supporting evidence).

It goes like this:

A large number of "believers" make a strong contention such as for the "Face on Mars". "If only NASA would rephotograph the area, even a skeptic would be convinced." The area is then rephotographed and it is totally obvious that all they saw were eroded rocks. Suddenly the chant changes to, "NASA tricked us with fake photographs."

Believers in prayer say, "If only a large-scale study was done, atheists would see what we are talking about." When the study fails to show any difference, the excuses come out rather in thickes rathern than EVEN THE SLIGHTEST re-examination that the believer may be in error.

Crop circle believers say, "There is NO WAY a human could make a complex pattern like that in the dark!" Of course, some humans do and the believers totally discount their own test and sputter some more nonsense rather than accept the fact.

"I moved a pinwheel with my mind!" Nope, it was air currents, dude. The skeptic recreates the "magic" and the believer says, "See? you have telekinetic powers too!"

This same scenario is repeated ad nauseum as pertains to astrology, numerology, synchronicity, faith-healing, UFOS, Edgar Cayce, pyramids, etc. etc.

*Sigh*

People love to cling to their beliefs.

What set you off on this by the way? It's gotta be something  You haven't posted in a while.

A friend of mine once convinced a small group of people that he could modify the shapes of clouds through thought. Of course the the really small clouds always disapear after a few minutes anyway. He had them going pretty good. It was the stupidest demonstration ever, but these people bought it.

I have a question on the apologizing thing, though. Say you were one to apologize quiet a bit, but then it didn't matter. Do you keep trying to prove yourself or do you just drop it?

And why?

Drop it would be proving it? Or would that be disproving it? Caring or un-caring?

So say you apologized to someone like 20 times, and then finally you just left it alone, one apology. Would you go back and delete it, and say to hell with it?

The cloud thing? You just look at the cloud....a very small one...and tell a group of losers that you will make it disapear...small clouda all dissapate in a few minutes. Practice picking your clouds beforehand and you will have 100% success. The people who view it must be really stupid the way I see it because he tried it on me and I just laughed and asked if he thought I was that stupid. He "taught" a few others to "make clouds disapear" and they were really impressed. They thought they were psychic. This was done with college students (he is a physics teacher...and really full of shit bigtime) for what it is worth.

I watched Blaine's "Street Magic" again the other night. In one scene he has a yong woman pick a card and put it back in the deck. He then puts the deck back in the box. Two or three times he askes her to hold the box loosely on the end and lo and behold the card pops up. This is done simply with a rubber band - woo hoo! The ladies watching and participating were totally blown away.

Later he does a "levitation" which entails simply standing on one's tip toes at such an angle to hide the lifting foot. The audience is totally flabbergasted. Then one pipes up, I read about about Eastern masters being able to do such things.

The gulliblility of these folks is easily matched by many in our crowd here. The summation is ALWAYS THE SAME: "If I cannot figure it out, it MUST be magic or mystical or a sign from God or aliens or angels or..."

Maybe that was off topic. I should probably just p.m. that to someone then. Thanks though.

My grandfather joked to this young woman one time, "Hey, look at that! Those 2 stars are right in a straight line!" She was in awe. We all laughed when he told us about this, except for my dimwitted stepmother, who didn't get why it was a joke.

Kind of like your "aetheists are more logical, stronger of will, etc. than religious people" posts that are repeated ad nauseum.

Swami, don't worry if you don't believe in God and never will. Heaven is just the carrot and hell is just the stick. You really aren't going to hell just because you are a heathen.

Your parents, relatives, and the nuns who whacked you on the wrist or did whatever else is still bugging you aren't going to change either. The people on S&P are unlikely to change their beliefs in spite of your trying. That's just the way beliefs tend to be, unchanging. Granted, there is the occasional epiphany.

I do wish you would give the believers a break, they may not be as smart, logical, or whatever else you are, but they are still human and their folly is the same as yours.

After all.

LunarEclipse, an occasional epiphany is a valuable success!!!!! My friend hammered on me about how prayer was a pointless waste of time and how Catholicism makes no real sense, and it took a long time for me to crack! But I did, and I am horrified that I might have lived my entire life a Catholic were it not for my non-brainwashed big mouthed friend.

"I do wish you would give the believers a break, they may not be as smart, logical, or whatever else you are, but they are still human and their folly is the same as yours."

Why don't you give the skeptics a break. Why do skeptics have to compromise their beliefs in order to be gentle on the believers. I am a believer and I don't want condescending weak kneed responses to my posts. I want unvarnished honesty in order that I may know if my beliefs stand on their own. Such responses have often made me reevaluate my position. Being offended by another persons view because it throws your view into question is just ego and the lack of a dynamic viewpoint. Knowing when to reevaluate and when to ignore is where wisdom comes in.
