No such thing as a skeptic
    #623929 - 05/01/02 12:00 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

While it is sometimes "fun" to separate into camps and verbally duke it out, there is no such thing as a skeptic or a believer except in relationship to a specific issue.

There have been a whole bunch of nonsensical threads started lately on this. Most everyone here is probably skeptical of the War on Drugs or the existence of Santa Claus. Does that make one a skeptic? I believe in honesty and fairness in my dealings with people. Am I then a believer?

What if you believe in God, but not alien abduction, are you then schizophrenic?

Let's stick to topics and not some vague, generalized (and non-existent) mindset.

Yes, i agree. I think the whole "believer"/"skeptic" classification is rather cult-like and detrimental to ANY open-minded discussion.

I agree.
However, in my post in the Believers and non-believers thread I was talking about two fundamentally different world paradigms that might be the root of this skeptic vs, believer debate. It would allow for us to agree on certain politics (WOD, etc.), but when it comes to the metaphysical realm the two seem irreconcileable. While I agree that all of these skeptic vs. believer threads are not so productive, perhaps it is because we have been approaching them in the wrong way. We need to start looking at the very basis of the way we look at the world, and then maybe our differences can be understood, if not reconciled. See my post in the other thread.....

Peace.

perhaps it is because we have been approaching them in the wrong way.

You mean like insisting that your view is infallible and that "we're" just naysaying, scientific (yeah, we wear fuckin' labcoats. Get real.), apathetic, mathematic jerks who just want to start trouble. Or maybe we're just "fools"....

Damn! Where was I when they handed out the labcoats? Those are very cool. Gotta get me one.

sclorch, i do not even know how to respond to such a statement. i have never once insisted that my view is infallible, and i have never considered "you" (pl) to be apathetic or mathematic jerks. And please excuse that I called Swami a fool. Swami i hope that you will forgive me too, I think you have an intelligence of the highest order, and I did not mean it literally. I simply meant to convey my frustration because at the time i felt that Swami had attacked my statements, but not addressed my idea as a whole.

As for the sentence that you responded to, from what I can tell you missed the point of what I was trying to say. I do not consider my view superior to yours, and I try to keep an open mind and uderstand other peoples ideas, but my view is still my view, and i come here to share it with others. i get frustated when people cannot understand what i am trying to say. perhaps you can relate to that problem sclorch. this believer vs. non-believer thing is ridiculous, and I liken it to the frosted mini-wheats commercial : wheats vs. sweets. My earlier post was attempting to have some dialogue that might lead to an understanding between these two groups. If you cannot appreciate that, then I am very sorry. I do not know what I said to upset you so, sclorch, but whatever it was I apologize and i hope that we can forget all of this and pursue a better understanding of each other's view's on the world.

Peace.

Jared- could you trim that url? it's making this thread hard to read...

JPAtanat-
I do not know what I said to upset you so, sclorch, but whatever it was I apologize and i hope that we can forget all of this and pursue a better understanding of each other's view's on the world.

First off, I'm not offended- I'm FRUSTRATED. It's rarely WHAT you say that offends me (hasn't happened on the Shroomery EVER... you'd have to know me personally to offend me). Your sloppy thinking is what FRUSTRATES me. You may be a genius, but if you squander it... it isn't worth jack. That is what I keep seeing: Squandered intelligence. It's like when you know someone is capable of something and they just throw it away... usually because they just haven't [REALLY] looked at it from my perspective. I see all this talk about "open-mindedness" yet no one ever REALLY seems to comprehend my posts. I don't care how many "I dig"s I get... I want "I understand"s. That understanding will show itself in the reply.
