> Why don't smart kids make themselves popular?

If they are like me, then it is because they choose not to be popular. There were more important things in my life than worrying about the latest trends in clothing, hairstyle, or what some actor and actress had been doing lately. I was kind of an odd duck and got along very well with all of the cliques, but really didn't belong to any of them. I was equally at home presenting research I had done on neural networks at a science symposium, participating in amature thai boxing matches, playing music in a jazz band, working for a library after school, or teaching children how to swim.

> Your college grades directly impact what type of job you get afterwards.

*laugh* No offense, but this sounds like something my high school guidance councilor would have said. I am an employer and have hired many people over my life. I look for one thing with respect to college... did they make a 4.0 gpa. If so, that person will not be working for me. I have learned the hard way that most people with exceptional grades are great a memorizing facts, but have no capacity to solve problems outside of what they have been taught.

> There is always time for fun...but college is serious business.

I went to one of the top engineering schools in the US, though most people have never heard of it. Our student body was only around 5000 people, including both undergrad and graduate students. We were also known as a party school. Playboy magazine once released a list of the top party schools in the US. We didn't make the list, but at the bottom there was a footnote saying, more or less, that it wouldn't be fair to compare the men at my school with the boys at the others. We partied hard on the weekends and studied extremly hard during the week. People that could not balance the two didn't last long.

> while college is considered a lax time for partying, screwing around and drugs

That is not how I view college at all, but could easily be mistaken from my own words. I have said before that high school is for learning and college is for exploring, but few people understand what I mean. Typically the reduce it to high school is for learning and college is a lax time for partying, screwing around, and drugs.

High school is for learning and I don't enjoy the idea of teenagers using drugs (including alcohol). By learning, I mean learning the fundementals that are going to be needed to make it through life. Not just acedemics, but social skills and moral values as well. This is the time that children should be learning about adulthood, practicing becoming adults. College is for exploring. By this, I mean learning to think on your own without somebody else telling you what to do, how to act, or what values are important.

Right on here^^^ I learned no social skills or values in highschool and so used college for that. That is the reason I disliked grade and highschool. Mostly you are given cultural propaganda about God and Country and that is called moral value, then you are left to fend for youself on social skills.

Re: Why are nerds unpopular? [Re: Seuss]

my high school career was alot like your, seuss.

i played upright bass in orchestra and jazz band. i fought in tae kwon do tourney and placed first in the south (TN, KY, AL, GA, Miss., FL). i hung out with the "outcasts", but felt at home with every clique. i was in AP chemistry, english, etc, but was also starting tacle on the football team. i enjoyed high school. i also gig'd professionally at night during my senior year playing bass for local bands.

i got caught skipping school 3 times (out of the 20 or so time i skipped.) each time i got caught i was at the library studying subjects i wanted to learn instead of what i was being fed in class. theoretically, i shouldve failed my senior year because i really didnt care for the subjects i was supposed to learn. my english teacher said if i could "wow" her she would pass me so i recited Act 5, Scene 5 from macbeth. she passed me. actually, i sung it as a song and wrote a little song on guitar to accompany it, heh.

i never got much of the hazing that i hear about here on the boards in high school. i got a taste in jr. high before i had my major developement cycle and reached 6'4" and started lifting weights. i imagine if i never wouldve had that growth spurt and muscle developement, i wouldve had a more tenuous high school carreer because i wouldnt have been physically able to compete in the fighting tourneys or football and probably wouldve been a "band geek" (even though i was never actually in band.)

if i couldve changed one thing, i wouldve gone into computers WAY sooner. the WWW was introduced when i was in high school. at the time, i was waaaaay into music so i never really gave it as much interest as alot of my friends. it wasnt until a year or so ago i truely started to delve into the digital relm learning networking, how to admin servers, php, relational databases (SQL), html, linux, etc.

I am glad that most people don't share your opinion because I know for a fact that my wife has gotten chosen for 2 jobs where her grades got her the job over "average" students. It shows dedication when you make good grades. She did not have a 4.0...she could only manage a 3.7 while raising three kids and dealing with a marriage. Why don't smart kids make themselves popular?

I don't think being smart necessarily makes you "unpopular"...because some of the smartest kids I knew in highschool were some of the most popular kids in the school and not anything close to a "nerd" (for the record, I am, always have been, and likely always will be a "nerd"...however I didn't suffer from a total lack of popularity through highschool - I had friends from all the cliques).

No, but you may be surprised how much Canadian society (and especially our school system) has in common with that of America

Don't forget that our children watch almost all the same television as yours do!

I'm not saying that all nerds are popular in Canada or anything like that...most nerds here are just as unpopular as I gather they are down in the US.

I simply wanted to point out that being smart does not necessarily make one unpopular. Not all smart people act like your stereotypical "nerd", either.

Completion shows dedication, and a 3.7gpa is not a 4.0gpa. I have yet to meet anybody with a 4.0gpa that can think outside of the box rather than simply memorize what the book says, at least at the undergrad level.

It is a huge mistake to assume that grades directly relate to being the "best and the brightest". I personally like to judge a potential employee by the research they have done, the journal papers they have written, and the experience they have.

"Completion shows dedication, and a 3.7gpa is not a 4.0gpa. I have yet to meet anybody with a 4.0gpa that can think outside of the box rather than simply memorize what the book says, at least at the undergrad level."

I will address this first. The only reason my wife couldn't pull a 4.0 was that she had to spend time being a mother and putting up with my shit. I averaged 3.6 because I was working full time and being a father. If I had been free, but with my current frame of mind, a 4.0 would not have been that difficult. When I went to college I already had 18 years of work experience behind me. With that experience to draw upon I found college dumbfoundingly easy at least on an undergrad level. When you look at the tech field you will have 25 4.0s competing for the same job. Your assertion was that grades are not that important, and while everyone does not need a 4.0, grades do matter.

"It is a huge mistake to assume that grades directly relate to being the "best and the brightest". I personally like to judge a potential employee by the research they have done, the journal papers they have written, and the experience they have."

In the tech fields you cannot get that 4.0 without the good research and papers.

"If you are going to college and barely passing or failing classes because of partying you are wasting your time."

This was just a response to the attitude on this board that college is only for exploration and fun, not necessarily anything you said. One's whole life should be about exploration and fun, but college is there to provide training. If you need the training then if you are serious about it you will make the grades...if one does not need it...then why would a person go? Whether you get financial aid or pay cash it is a service that one is paying for. One may as well get their moneys worth. I have spent my life educating myself, I did not need college for that. College was for the training and the experience.

True. You do not have to be dysfunctional to be smart. You can be normal. It is fact however that the "weird" smart kids are usually more focused....because they don't have a life.

Or could it be the other way around?

Maybe they don't have a life because they are more focused. Most creative geniuses seem to have troubled personal lives.

What I noticed was that most of the really popular kids in high school, turned out to be mediocre at best. Most turned out to be the jerks they were and failed in the bigger arena of life.

The nerds and those picked on usually did very well after they got out of the nightmare of high school.

Most social skills do not make one a good or happy person. In fact often the most popular are the most shallow which shows up sooner or later. :mushroom2:

I wish I could say the same about the social landscape of Dallas, TX.  I remember in High School, everyone said: "Things are going to change when you get out."  But nothing changed.  'Good ol boy' networks and cliques have insured that the best, most high paying jobs end up in the hands of the same jocks and preps that ran everything in HS.  I've seen the most sincere, honest people end up in the gutter.  I've seen nerds who design new technologies get paid shit compared to the preps that SELL those same technologies.  The ones with the biggest egos end up running the companies, while the humble nerds get swept into the corner doing the lion's share of the work while getting the lamb's share of pay.

The people most likely to succeed in my society are the ones that have the most money backing them.  I worked my way through college, having no time for extracurricular activities and charity events.  How can my resume and transcript compare to those kids who had their $3000 a month lofts and $30,000 sports cars handed to them by mommy and daddy?  All those kids had to worry about was school.  I had to worry about paying bills and surviving in addition to my grades.

I wish it were that easy. But its kinda hard to just pack up and leave behind everything you know for a completely foreign environment. However, as time passes and more of my friends either move or become corrupted by this reprehensible society I live in, moving becomes a more attractive and viable an option every day.

I don't plan on still being here in 5 years. But for now, I have to be here so I can gather my strength and research cool places to live.

"Maybe they don't have a life because they are more focused. Most creative geniuses seem to have troubled personal lives."

With serious nerds (read pocket protector nerds) this can be a problem, but this is usually because they see their work as more important than their friends and family. This is also related to being a workaholic. There are many popular people who develop this problem as well. The inability to manage one's personal life on that level is a serious character flaw.
