I have looked around the Palmer & Valdez area. Never saw any, nor heard of any in the wild.

Really it depends on what you are looking for and where in Alaska you are. People seem to forget that from one end of the state to the other is nearly 1,500 miles. In South East Alaska where I am at you will find a host of choice edibles including mass amounts of King Boletes amongst a variety of other Boletes. Chantrells are common as are some forms of agaricus, oysters, etc.

Really if you want to have fun hunting then you will have to branch away from so called active species to edible species. Only various forms of Amanita will be so called active and I would not entrust my life with eating those. Other then that maybe Psilocybe cyanescens but I have not seen them myself. But if you do want to look for edibles then trust me there is no better place to look in terms of the quantity of mushrooms and also the lack of competition.
