Haha I knew that was going to be good. No need to watch Indiana Jones this week. Hope us Bay Area guys/girls can have something that exciting.

I might even say "hella" savage...

One time I was hunting and this father and his son were working in their yard across the street.  They had been eying me for awhile and I was a little nervous about it.  Sure enough the father made a shrill whistle at me.  I slowly walked over expecting him to tell me to leave or I'd call the cops (I was in a public park at the time).  Turns out, he gave me a few tips and suggested a few other places to look around the park.  Pretty friendly guy actually, just goes to show that not everyone is out to get us mushroom hunters

I was kinda hoping by sav he meant savant, not savage. But I can see me being a savage, I guess.  :crazy2:

I have lots of great hunting stories, I know I've forgotten alot though, I'll whip out a few.

On a routine trip to my local golf course, I was busy picking away when a jolly old golfing man approached me and asked what I was up to. I fed him a bullshit story about how I had joined a mycological society at a young age (I'm only 18) because my father was a keen mushroom hunter and I enjoyed it as well.

I said I had found what I thought was a rare species of mushroom and I was collecting samples for verification (200+ samples, he didn't seem to notice ). He was very interested in the whole affair and commended me for "getting out and doing something instead of causing mischief and doing drugs".

Little did he know...

A great day I had mushroom picking was the start of the season here and I was checking out a local gym.

I found a small spot and was picking away oblivious to the fact that two council workers were watching me. When I finished picking I walked right past one of them and he asked me if I was picking mushrooms, at first I denied it but then he came up with the point that a teenager, wearing a radiohead t-shirt looking through a mulch garden could only be up to one thing. I agreed with him and spilt the beans.

We started talking about mushrooms and he said he had been looking for them ever since he got back from the states but didn't know what to look for. He had an amusing story about going out before dawn and kicking over piles of shit to find mushrooms.

He had some mushrooms with him and asked me if they were magic but they were just some species of coprinus, so I whipped out some freshly picked subs to show him. He was ecstatic and said "oh shit, there the ones" and took me straight to a large spot, (200+ mature, uncountable pins) picked a few huge ones then munged them on the spot, no dicking around.

We sat around smoking and talking about lots of stuff. Eventually his work mate came over and said they had to get to the next job, by this stage the guy was tripping strongly and I felt sorry for him, hard labour and mushrooms don't mix. Before he left he told me about "mother lode" spot in  ***** **** **** and to check around the gardens by the river.

I headed straight there by foot, about an hours walk using their directions and came across more mulch then I had ever seen in my life and just as many types of mushrooms to match.

After half an hours searching I had found three gigantic spots and countless small ones. It was a very pleasant day indeed.

A quick (and last) story was more entertaining then anything.

Driving along with my brother and a friend we pulled up at some lights in Newmarket. I threw a cig butt out the window and caught a glimpse of something special. On reexamination I noticed fifty odd mushrooms growing right beside the traffic light in a mulch garden, sure enough they were subs.

I just jumped out did a hasty pick and got back in the car.

It's funny how mushrooms come about.

Great thread. Being approached while picking is a great chance to perfect our bullshitting skills. I have a different response at every place I go. Some people are pissed off but others are genuinely curious. I've had people even volunteer to help, haha.

On Sunday, there was a professional photographer who was talking to grouch and I while we hunted at a Seattle park. He broke out his pro cam with a lens that was nearly a foot long, and started taking pictures of the Cyans. I should have asked him to email me the pics.
