First hunting trip... this ever happen to you?

Non-brief info as it pretains to the hunt: (skip two paragraphs to get to the good stuff)

I'd been reading a lot in the forums and a lot about mushroom hunting and indentification so I thought that i'd go try and find some. I live in the pacific northwest, so there shouldn't be a problem related to my locale.

I live in what is kind of a rural part of a small town.. It's on the outskirts of where most people live, so it's a 5 to 10 minute bike ride to downtown. So, I live right next to a horse field, about a 5 minute hike through the forest to another field (not cows.. it seems to be fallow all of the time).

I didn't want to go through the horse field because I didn't want to scare the horses (they are retired race horses) and get the owners upset. It probably wouldn't matter because my step mom collects horse crap sometimes for her gardening. So I decided to go to the other field.

I got there really fast, I had a bag in my right pocket, and digital camera in the other.
And as soon as I get to the field, what do I see? A brown bear! I had two options:
1) Get closer and take a picture!
2) Get the fuck out of there.
I chose the latter.
I looked at him for a while since he was pretty far away. I think he noticed me though, but he was a brown bear, and not really agressive. I took a picture on my digital camera but i dunno how good it will turn out, this sort of camera isn't meant for stuff like this. I wish i could get a telescopic lens but i doubt it can use it.

I turn around and walked quickly through the forest (very dense prickers;) and looked again at him. I noticed him beginning to move, not towards me, but his body was now perpendicular to me and his neck was fucking huge. Imagine the muscles in him. Well I did. And I ran through the horse field (quicker than the forest) as fast as I fucking could.

I dunno what I'll do now. Wait a week I guess and try again. There aren't bear problems in my area, or cougars, but now I guess I'll have to read up on bear encounters before I go hunting again (damnit I don't want to spend all my time reading this summer).

Well, anybody else meet a bear?

Haha... can't say I've ever had that happen. All I see are deer, opossums, birds, and squirrels and such. The strangest animal I've ever seen here in GA was a fox... Saw him on the way home from a concert the other night. I wasn't sure if it was a chiwawa with big ears or a fox, but when I saw his tail, I knew it was a fox :P

i have had that happen to me bofore, if you are a good distance away and you stanstill he will not mess with you, i have stood and watched a bear for 30 minutes before when i was hunting, they eventually just move a long, but it is always possible that they can get pissed if you are in there area so dont get to careful and make sure you get a huge head start if he starts to run at you!
