Heat and P.C. Cambodia

Allrighty then... I've got 2 casings of P.C. Cambodia cased in straight verm according to Hongus Tek and humidified by perlite. One has been in pinning conditions (mid-high 70s sometimes dropping to 70 at night, never lower than 70, and 100%r/h) since the 14th (12 days), and the other has been in these conditions since the 21st (5 days). I was planning on going to buy a heater that maintains a certain temperature today, and set it for 83-85. Would this be a better temperature range for P.C. Cambodia? I hear it thrives in a higher temperature range than normal for cubies. Would this be why I havn't seen any pinning yet? There is only a bit of mycelium reaching up in places in the elder of the two brothers, although it has been like that for a few days. The younger casing has had some extra colonization of the surface laterally, but not upwardly like the bigger one. The Cambodian I got is from Ryche Hawk, and his website says he fruits his crop most efficiently at 93 degrees. I can sense I am close, but I think they would be happier if they were at a little higher of a temperature. I'd appreciate any feedback I could get from ANYONE! thanks! abudiwa A picture-filled update still to come by the end of the weekend.

I've grown Cambos for more than a year now, and I've never even come close to the 90s. They do fine in the 80s. Also, in my opinion, the reason you haven't seen pins yet, is because plain vermiculite casings take longer to colonize. 50/50 peat/verm is much better for casing.

Well here's the thing: They've been colonized for awhile. They colonized for a week and a half before I put them in the terrarium on the 14th and 21st. They're just chillin' now. I've been fanning 3-5 times a day, and the temp and r/h has remained static. I'm pretty sure it's the lower temp stunting their growth (unless of course cambodians just pin and fruit slower than others). I'm actually thinking of going to coir (coco fiber) after these are through. What do you think about those? and you think around 85 would be an allright temp I gather. That's good, cause I'm trying what I can to make my kids comfortable. thank you! abudiwa

ok one last question. I'm thinking my rubbermaid is a 20gal (or around there). What wattage of heater should I be looking for? oh also a 1 1/2- 1 3/4 inch layer of perlite. thanks again! abudiwa

85 degrees should be fine. If you cased and placed in a chamber 12 days ago and haven't seen any pins, I'd say there's a problem. If you see mycelial growth in the casing, that's good, but 12 days after casing you should have at least some mature mushrooms. Most of my Cambodias pin after 4-5 days at most in the chamber. 50-watt heaters are good for 5-15 gallon chambers. So anywhere between 50 and 100 watts should be great, but aquarium heaters need to be submerged in water. Other possibilities: Your casing has dried out. If this is the case, and the verm looks crumbly, slowly mist it up to optimum levels over a day or two. Don't shower the damn thing. Or, worst case scenario is you have contaminants, but after 12 days you'd know for sure either by sight or smell. So you can probably rule that out. Hope that helps.

Well 14 days and nothing. still nothing. no smell, so i'm not contaminated. Would you suggest I spray it down? how much? also, do you think a deep scratching is in order?

If you decide to add moisture, do it slowly over a day or two, not all at once. Deep scratching is most effective to combat overlay.
