no mycelium???
    #4307893 -

hey guys i knocked up 4 1/2 pt jars tuesday morning, mexi-cube strain. i checked them today and there is absolutely NO visible mycelium in any of the jars. no mold either. i was also wondering if maybe i innoc'd em too early, as i finished PCing them around 12ish, and starting innoculating at around 3. do you think it could have killed the spores? the jars were very cool to the touch. btw, i have them in a closed shoebox with paper coffee filters over all the jar lids. i think i am going to wait until tuesday gets here and then check on them again, that will have been one week....if i see no mycelium then, i will assume something went wrong. also, if the mycelium doesn't start, can i use this same BRF and vermiculite, since it has already been sterilized? should i just sterilize the jars again with the same substrate, or mix up a new batch? thanks and sorry for all the questions in one post..

Be patient. It is more than 2 weeks after I knocked up my jars and mycelium is slowly starting to grow.

3 days you have what you should have......nuttin. Occasionally one gets lucky enough to have myc showing by that time, but usually it is longer. This hobby takes patience...plenty of it. The reward for it is pretty damn good though.

Your jars could have been to hot. May feel cool on outside, but the inside core temp. could be much hotter. Time will tell. Good Luck.

yeah, its takes a min. before being really visible. Its hard to tell if u do, if u dont know what new mycelial growth looks like, i remember from my last jar looking at the edges of new growth where out ahead of what was faintly visible, gray to see thru, short, strands within the tiny gaps of substrate. If u do, its very tiny, and mostly see-thru, look VERY closely directly around innoc. zones for tiny single strands of see-thru looking formations. I saw it on my new jars 3 or 4 days into incubation, sure enough its gettin bigger, more jelly lookin strands around innoc zones. Please dont confuse for cobweb though (last jar fell victim) its unmistakably different. Looks like grey cotton-like fibrous growth, and VERY RAPID growth, unlike myc.

Agreed.  You're best off just letting your jars cool overnight.

I'd recommend waiting at least twice that long before tossing them.  I just 'nocced up 12 jars with spores; 11 showed growth within five days, the last one didn't have anything until ten days in.  Now it's strong, rhizomorphic growth.  Multispore is quite variable.

As far as reusing your substrate, I'd recommend against it.  It's not that much trouble to do it over, and for all you know, your current substrate is the cause of the delay (although it's unlikely; it was probably heat).  Also, after two weeks, your water content is bound to be a bit lower, and you might as well aim for perfect.

Is it just me or is it odd to pick up a 3 year old post?

Yes, it is odd, I was just noticing what I'd replied to there as well...

if that were true, then how come we dont burn ourself while drinking coffee when its cool enough to hold. The jars wont hold heat in. heat can transfer easily through glass.

a substrate jar thats cool to the touch is ok to inoculate.
