barley substrate?

Anybody know if you can use Barley for a substrate in growing? I was looking for something to eat and I came upon a bag of it, which made me wonder because it's a grain. Funny thing is, there's a recipe for Barley Mushroom Soup on the back of the bag!

if it's barley for soup then it will be polished, ie had its outer coating removed.
This kind is all right for making cakes, but is too sticky to shake.

If it's polished (bran removed), it's probably lower in protein as well so your yeilds might be less than whole grain.
