Well, strictly speaking, this wouldn't be unpowered because you'd need an airplane or rocket to get up there, but yea, a rock dropped from that altitude would exceed the speed of sound.

Yep, it also depends on altitude. The dependency is actually on density, which is a function of both temperature and altitude (and humidity to a lesser extent).

I studied this when I was learning to fly; I'm a pilot.

Yes, he did. The speed of sound is a function of the density-altitude (calculated for aviation purposes from from the pressure and altitude). At his jump altitude of ~100,000 feet the air was thin enough (high density altitude) that the speed of sound was only ~500 knots compared to sea level where it's ~700 knots.

He exceed the speed of sound for a shot time before deploying a drogue chute (similar to what skydiving instructors use during tandem jumps) for stability. Once the drogue was deployed, he remained below the speed of sound for the rest of the trip.
