my favorite guitarist is probably either SRV or wes montgomery.

i'd probably say that either John McLaughlin or paco de lucia are probably the best guitarists i have ever seen.

Since nobody will ever mention it, I will.

Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles.  He can play many types of music.  Rock, jazz, middle eastern, with some insane metal riffs.  Not to mention he can double as a synth player too.

He's definitely one of the top 5.

Django Reinhardt. god damn, can he play! plays with two fingers what most couldn't even do with four (or five including thumb).

the first song on Basse Contre Basse (2 bassists playing together, electric and upright accoustic) is called django, could be about him

speaking of bass why don't we do bassists as well or do people not listen to bassists as much? I find there are more interesting talented bassists to listen to than guitarists

the song "django" was written by the modern jazz quartet as a tribute to django reinhardt. it's a classic jazz song now.

some of django's most popular recordings:

minor swing, nuages, honeysuckle rose, dinah, les yeux noir (dark eyes), and other pre-war swing era tunes.

also try listening to some of his unaccompanied pieces. you won't believe they're all improvised.

the historical significance of django reinhardt was that he was pretty much the first guitar player to bring the guitar into a solo context with a band backing him. he could play super loud on acoustic guitar and could cut through the rhythm section.
