HQ had also dramatic drying out of rye grain jars using filter disks. she and her jackal put them into a fruiting chamber (rh 85-90%, temps at 80-85 degrees) but still had drying out- the jars that take more than 12-14 days seem to be lost causes- 90% colonized, top 10% not. when shaken the top 10% dries out again- :( jars that finished in 10 days were fine... just seems the longer they have to be in the jars (like, for slower colonizing strains- the 12-14 day ones are gt's from an isolate) the more chance theyll just dry the top layer of rye out. this time theyre using the filter disks either over or under a metal lid with a hole punched in the top- hopefully they wont need a special humidified chamber with this. if so, theyll drop the filter disks and just stick to polyfil- humidified chambers take too much space for them, even if they can cut down coloinization times by a few days.

....with the effect that you loose the gas exchange benefits you gained with the filter discs

A couple of thoughts. First, couldent you store your jars in a sealed coontainer with a few cups of wet pearlite in there to slow down the drying? Also, you could lay the original top of the jar over the filter disk every other day or something. The jars would probably still be getting enough air exchange while increasing the time by 100% that it takes to dry out. I don't know for sure, just my 2cents.

Anno: I'm not sure that you do. The gas exchange through something like a polyfil top is limited to a slow diffusion anyway but it still works. You don't need much.

I've covered filtertops with foil and they still lose some moisture - some air exchange is still happening and growth is still faster than a sealed jar.

It works well.
