My small torch
    #4255847 - 06/04/05 12:24 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

So i have this small 5 inch peruvianus cutting that i just recently rooted and planted.
It was pupping like crazy when i got it. It has 5 pups and some of them even have pups of their own.

Why is that? My pachanoi only pups when i cut a branch off...

Its growth speed is very very low and i am wondering if the culprit for that is the ridiculous amount of pups coupled with a still undeveloped root system.
My pachanoi has grown ~2 inches in the same amount of time the peruvianus has grown ~5mm.

I'm wondering if i should remove the pups so it focus its energy in the main branch and in growing a good root system...What you people say?

Could be fertilizer too high in nitrogen. Could be damage to the growing point.

looks like a kk242, i think when they decide to pup they don't just make 1 or 2. I cut this one recently, it is only a little over an inch in diameter and maybe 6 inches tall yet it had the energy to throw out 5 pups

Thanks all!

Felix, i never seen mealy bugs. Are they visible in the naked eye?
Could it be responsible for all the pupping?

God if it does have them i don't want that shit infesting my other plants...

Faslimy, that is one beatiful cactus!

mealy bugs are way too small to be seen when young (when they crawl around) but when they get mature they get attached to the areoles and often leave white wool (looks like a hanging ball of spider's web). somehow they manage to live amongst the spines in the areoles. look for the hanging wool and play a bit with the areole it hangs from, you'll see more white wool coming out - it's mealy bugs (i do hope it's not).
i thought it was at first because they often cause excessive pupping or even cristate/monstrous forms...
