Good luck upon your entry into the wonderful world of cactus cultivation!

I have been cultivating for nearly 3 years, both pachanoi and peruvianus. It's a very rewarding and addictive hobby!

My observations & advice:

In my experience, Pedros grow faster than Torches, and Pedros produce more pups (which means more growing tips that you can cut and re-plant). The thorns are NASTY on Torches, and can hurt you. Pedro thorns are much friendlier to your hands. Torches require less water, and are more prone to rot if over-watered. My Torches are all a darker green (with more blue-ish tint) than my Pedros. Does this mean they're more potent? I honestly don't know. When I add to my cactus collection, I will likely seek to add more Pedros, not Torches, because of the difference in growth rate (and the evil Torch thorns -OUCH).

Advice: Buy cuttings, not seed. Buy the largest cuttings you can afford. Be prepared to wait a year, more like 2 years to get your garden well-established. If you start from seed, it will take even longer...
