i would like to add to those that are concerned about new users, i think that we have 33,300 some registered users and are growing at around 200 new ones per month..... and thats the registered members of the bbs...

i doubt that we will get that many new newbs that it would cause an issue

And how many of the 33,300 users have posted in the last six months? It doesn't mean anything but a number if they aren't here.

The actual number of regular members is much less than that.

Do you really think a magic mushroom forum will grow as big as Erowid though? The Shroomery and Erowid are really two completely different types of sites. Erowid comes under a lot of fire because it is a commonly known site with information on all drugs, from the mainstream to the obscure. Even the Shroomery just links to Erowid or copies information when talking about some more obscure or hard drugs much of the time.

But these forums are just a community that I doubt will ever grow to become as famous as Erowid, especially by just promoting it at some large events. Much of the Shroomery is just idle philosophy or politics, or sometimes just conversations like you'd find in a chatroom. It's not anything like Erowid, and I doubt it'd come under the same fire as Erowid has.

And the attention Erowid has gotten isn't necessarily all bad either. If Erowid is publicized as a place where information about all drugs is contained (heavens no!) then people might actually log onto it and check out real information rather than believing government propaganda. Those who don't care enough to even check it out are those who don't matter.

This is the information revolution. At such a time when people need to be informed, I think the slight possibility of negative attention needs to be accepted.

I fully support the promotion of this site. It can't just remain static with the current members it has plus a few noobs a month. Just because we'll have voices at large events and such to promote the Shroomery, it doesn't mean it's going to explode or get a sudden influx of mainstream attention either. Chances are the people who would come visit the site are the same type of people that are already here, except there'd be quite a bit more of them if all works out.

Not only that, but as a promoter, I can decide who I hand out flyers to, so I can ensure that it's only cool people who want to learn more about mushrooms.

Then whoever picks it up will likely be someone who's interested in mushrooms.

I guess I'd just be concerned about the manner and the persons who would be distributing said promotional material.

There're responsible cultivators and those that take psychedelics...and then there are, well, let's face it, hippie flakes.

If someone's not interested, or too dumb to the legwork and reading this site offers...maybe they ought not to be shown the site?

I mean, there already was an acid wave that failed to really mature...I don't see how promoting this site would do anything but harm.  Just my, thoughts, tho.

What stops those people from finding the site through the typical methods? i.e. search engines, word of mouth?

You guys act as if this site is populated with the cream of the crop in terms of psychedelic users, when in reality, there are plenty of people who frequent the site that many of you would consider undesirable.

Personally, I was interested in mushrooms AND the internet both for YEARS before I found the shroomery. I'm lucky I found this place and I'm sure the same goes for many of you. I really don't think the influx of new people to the site will be nearly as scary as you guys fear. New people show up here all the time!

also the people on this site grow mushrooms. the more people in the US growing the more the value of mushrooms will go down, yielding little profit. That sucks for the growers.

I found this site out of sheer luck. There was a link to it on some artists web site I found through the erowid art vault. I'f I wasn't browsing those links out of boredom I would likely still not have any idea what the shroomery was.
I think promotion, if handled intelligently (which I think it very well can be) would be more than great. Not just to make this information more readily available, but, like has been stated above, to help this site continue to grow into more than it already is.  It's a great resource, but the potential is huge. I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually believe a site like this if properly managed and developed could do great things towards reshaping common notions and perceptions of psychedelics, and their effects on individuals as well as communities. Not simply amongst fellow "psychonauts" either.
Not to get to far ahead of myself here, but one thought that kept entering my mind as I read through this tread, the rejections, rebuttals, questions, and so forth, was the simple fact that If any of us ever hope to see psychedelics, mushrooms in particular, more widely accepted, and (gasp!) even have some laws relaxed (save the laughter) Something somewhere is going to have to ignite quite a spark, and sure, take plenty of risks. I'm not saying this spark should or would come from the shroomery itself, but it sure is a hell of a good starting point, there's really nothing else like the shroomery to bring so many like minded individuals together who discuss topics such as this. I just hope this would be the goal of many shroomerites rather than few.
That being said, for this reason I personally think that any expansion and promotion of the shroomery, again, done with absolute care and caution, is not only brilliant and commendable, but also necessary. I'm one who believes that you are either going forward or going backwards at all time, almost never are you standing completely still, so with that in mind, as long as the admin's are still trying to go forward with this site and not let it slide back, I think they are doing a good job. I also would have a really hard time questioning their methods I guess, seeing as things seem to be going pretty well so far. Someone knows what they're doing.

Continue to take it further!

how i came to this site was fro a friend that was trying to figure out how to grow, having heard various lore about growing mushrooms on rice cakes i decided to find the info.

so my friend told me about all of the users and people online that grew and the logs and all of this

every day i would go to the main site and search, not knowing that he was talking about the bbs the whole time! haha took me weeks to find it and when i did it was great  i never left.

im thinking about the possiblity of adding a suffix to the sites url

such as www.shroomery.org/roo for flyers handed out at bonnaroo
or www.shroomery.org/demf for those handed out at the fuse music festival and so on

the url would log the unique visitor's ip and automatically transfer them right to the site

it would be the best way to gauge the accuracy of the promotions.

Indeed, most people I know go directly for the main URL, that's kinda like starting on the first page of a book.

Broadly generalizing the sixties had two kinds of hippies: The hippies who sat barefoot in the park all day smoking pot, and the ones who actually took part in the revolution.. and sat barefoot in the park in the evenings, smoking pot

It's scary, it's exciting, but I believe the Shroomery should not just sit in the park all day smoking pot but actually be part of the Fourth Psychedelic Wave (50's, 60's, 90's and now the 00's) and perhaps be a lead player in bringing it about.

The Shroomery has huge potential that lies dormant and it has the potential to grow far beyond its current limitations.

Ever heard "someone should do something"?
Well i agree with the Administrative decision that that "somebody" is all of us, the Shroomery, and the "something" that needs be done is forged as we speak on all three levels: among members, mods, and admins.

The Shroomery Commanders have decided, the Shroomery Generals are taking position and the Shroomery Troops are deciding their stances.

So it's Drug War they want? It's Drug War they'll get. Let's smite oppressive law enforcement with majesty, dignity and psychedelic brilliance. Let's make this site into one of the finest examples of Drug Culture and meet oppressive aggression with our arms wide open, armed with the truth about psychedelics, community spirit and meeting the dangerous misinformation with truth and honesty.

Psychedelics arent naughty, nor are they criminal in the true sense. It's time to get respectable, and get the respect we deserve.

Wake up, there's a Revolution going on :thumbup:

hmmm so the media will login OTD and be like "WTF were we thinking!! These people are INTELLIGENT!!  LEGALIZE DRUGS!!"

it's an ambitious goal, but part of the reason that the past "revolutions" didn't work was... well, lets face it, they were run by a bunch of stoner kids.  no one took them seriously, and no one will take this site seriously.  Adults dont take 20 year old kids dressed like bums with tattoos and dreads seriously (or 16 year olds posting scat pics for that matter).  I think that's fucked up that we're judged by these things, don't get me wrong, it's just kind of the way the world works.

I think it's a great idea, but I don't see the shroomery changing the course of the drug war at all, except to maybe make examples of us.
