Is "promotion" really such a good idea?
    #4206449 -

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure you're well intentioned, and I think the information the shroomery has to offer is invaluable... but drawing undue attention to the site might not be the best of ideas. We should be available to those who are interested but I think running around pushing flyers in peoples faces is going to get us the wrong type of attention. All it takes is a little media attention on spore suppliers for the ignorant people (unfortunately, the majority of the population) to think it's a safety issue. Look what happened with Leary and LSD. Manu people blame him for the illegalization of LSD due to his activism and "promotion". That may not be entirly true, but if the mainstream public hadn't had it pushed in their faces, there wouldn't have been such a big spotlight on it.

Now mushrooms are already illegal, but the spores arn't. It should also be stated that most mainstream media is not reputable. They would much rather scare people and get better ratings than spread the truth. Next thing you know, PC spores will be illegal in ALL states. Be careful how you "promote". Get the right message out there to those who WANT it, not those who you think need it. Don't ruin a good thing, PLEASE.

This is my opinion, and I would like to know what the rest of you think.

well that is a valid concern. and has been brounght up. we are one of the best sites on the internet for this information.
we are however currently protected under the freedom of speech and press. sites like erowid, lyceum (SP), mycotopia, and so on also offer the same information. if any of these sites were to be shut down, the shroomery would allready be on that list. but as of yet it has not happened.

we are going to be doing the street team in "underground" scenes, well close to them. mostly hitting music festivals where they will not be drawing any un-wanted attention.

lsd became illegal beacuse of the things that leary did, its true but with all of the people that got turned on, lsd is still around and cherished. i know that mushroom spores would be impossible to stop. and would probably be along the same line of canabis seeds if they were illegal. you can stil get em, and if you get caught ordering them overseas, you just get a letter

I am also somewhat wary of this idea, but mainly I'm excited.
I think our main concern is like zippoz already posted... keeping our advertising away from anyone underage.
That's where we could get into real trouble.  :ooo:
Other than that we are protected under freedom of speech.
As far as worrying about shroom spores being made illegal... I don't think that Shroomery promotion would be any different than being on internet search engines.
The feds obviously know about it already, and I don't think promoting at fests and the like would do that much to change it.
I think the time to stand up is at hand!  :penis:

I'm not so concerned with the shutdown of this site as I am with the effect of 'spreading the word'. I don't think current society is ready to accept freely and openly what we do and talk about here at the shroomery. Just because it's legal to talk about and protected under freedom of speech doesn't mean that certain people and/or groups wont try to shut us down. When they learn they can't shut us down, they will do everything else they can to make it difficult to use this information, and the first thing that will happen is spore vendors being shutdown. That CAN happen. And yes I agree with you that new laws against spores will not stop people from getting spores, but it WILL mean that I have to break one more law if I want to cultivate and enjoy my mushies. That's one more risk, one more charge, one more felony. One more reason to consider those who grow "criminals", and one step in the wrong direction. I also doubt that new laws against spore distribution would help the shroomery grow. I for one would have to re-evaluate if the risk is worth it. I would probably still grow, but for many others it might not be worth it.

Also, while I agree there should be STRICT rules on how promotional material is handed out, rules wont mean that information won't end up in the hands of an underage kid, who uses the information here to grow illegal mushrooms in his parents house, who then gets caught by his parents who end up looking at this site outraged because of the flyer. It just takes a few incidents like that and some media attention to spur lawmakers into soothing the public's fears by writing new drug laws. Knowledge is indeed power, but there are some really stupid people out there who will use the information the wrong way. The rest of us will end up paying for it.

I agree with all of you wary about this sort of thing, and would also like to add one more thought:

alot of people here who spread information might leave if this place gets that much bigger--they give information knowing they can be low-key and off the radar. If everyone and their mom and their local officer is browsing the site, who's going to give cultivation advice? or even hunting advice?

I'm sure as hell not. The beauty of the internet is to remain anonymous, and the more publicity you have towards a website promoting illegal activities, the less anonymous you become to the feds.

I for one am not willing to trade thousands of newbs for the handful of knowledgeable people who keep this place running, and agree with the points kratomboy and Letto made above.

Firstly, I love the shroomery and certainly would like to see it grow.

That said, I am alarmed, simply alarmed, that the only pro voice for this whole endeavor is, apparently, the one who introduced it.

I, too, am inherently against this whole thing. Rather than merely repeat or belabor what has already been said, I will add a personal anecdote;

I give a lot of my time to this site helping in General Questions and Other Drugs Discussion. I, for one, am very leary about the prospect of the general public (not just the general internet curious public) registering and posting here. I fear the work load will become just that - a work load, and it will fail to be worthwhile to me anymore.

Also, directing mass media here is not a good idea.

A lot of illegal shit gets talked about here, for one.

There are a lot of really bad trip reports here.

Yes, I realize that erowid has PLENTY of every kind of trip report and they aren't worried, but erowid doesn't have a topic called, "Has the shroomermy saved you from serious harm? let the world know!".

When you give these experiences to the media, who want ratings, and thus drama. Watch.

Fox News Correspondent says, live:
Drugs are bad, mmmkay. Some websites look to try and teach people about drugs and how to use them responsibly. SomeStoner421 said the shroomery provided him with the information to avoid a bad trip. But just what is a bad trip, and is this website really doing as much good as it claims? Watch as we expose this mad ring of illegal drug manufacturers, looking to pull your kids in with their new Street Team into their lair where they talk openly about illegal drug use and other illicit activities.

Tonight we will have dramatic reenactments of two of these "bad trips", one of which took place at one of their drug orgy "gatherings". Parents may want to send their children out of the room.

It's dark, I know, but tell me it's not likely.

And speaking of gatherings... I really was looking forward to meeting some really awesome people; people who I think have great personalities, I enjoy spending time shooting the shit with them, and I am not worried that any of them will do something stupid. Now factor in this promotion bullshit. I am sad for the day a shroomery gathering takes place, commercialized, burgenoning with people who are there just for drugs sake, posers. Idiots. PEOPLE, in that much derided MASSES sense. I like a few people. I HATE PEOPLE. PEOPLE are stupid - we all know this.

Press releases? Good god, man. Are you challenging the DEA to a fist fight?

"Hello major media. We know a lot about mushrooms and think that we could be helpful if anyone has questions. Also, we are doing a whole bunch of illegal shit. We've got pictures and everything. Please tell the world.

Many thanks,
Teh Shroomery"

Bad idea.

I can understand the desire to see the ODC grow. I was at a rave recently and talked about the shroomery to a few people. I almost wanted a flyer/business card/whatever to pass along. But do we really want people that can't remember a simple URL joining? I would reckon these to be the same type of people that can't use a search button.

Having printed material can't be good, either. It CAN and WILL end up in the hands of children.

The people that want to know can and will find us. It's not that hard.

And, if I may ask, what is the end goal of this promotion?

Also, what delta9 said about gatherings.

Actually the admins all support this endeavor and zippoz just seemed like the best guy for the job. Here's a quick reality check, this site isn't low key and hasn't been for quite some time now. We've weathered international media coverage due to the Ripper incident, and we receive almost a quarter of a million unique visitors monthly. That's roughly equivalent to being visited by every man, woman and child in Birmingham, Alabama, every month. If we were a city we'd be among the nation's 100 largest. Despite our lack of obscurity, nobody's ever been busted, investigated or even looked at funny by a DEA agent for anything they posted on this site (to the best of my knowledge).

Nobody will force you to be part of any promotional activities which make you uncomfortable, but people are under the mistaken impression that this plan is up for debate. Let us worry about any repercussions since we're the ones who will have to deal with them.

Is this site to the point where the Admins and Mods can do whatever pleases them? Or is this a site where the Admins and Mods are here to serve the community and have the community's best interests at heart?

Was this topic ever open for public discussion previous to its implementation?

A quarter of a million unique visitors - Why do we need more? Bigger is better? I'm for quality, and from what I've seen the quality of this site has diminished as its size has increased.

Maybe we haven't been bothered because we are low key.

I think this promotion idea is not the best for this community. I also resent the response from the Administration,

You are not the only one's who will have to deal with the repercussions. The community will be affected by any repercussions and therefor anyone who is a part of the community will be affected.

I wouldn't be suprised if money is at the bottom of this scheme. More visitors means the Admins can charge more for advertisement and can gain more advertisors.

I think this idea was not thought through with the interest of the community in mind.

I strongly oppose this move.

Concerned,
Joshua

Let me clear up a misconception. This site is and has always been run at the sole discretion of the administrators. We do our best to listen to members and I think in general we're very responsive to our community. Your confusion over who makes the decisions is a testament to that fact. Nevertheless, there are certain issues which aren't up for debate and this is one of them. Feel free to voice concerns, bitch, moan, whine or complain but in case it's not already perfectly clear, we've decided on this course of action and we plan to go ahead with it despite the fact that some members disagree with us.

Well, I don't think it's about money, really. The sponsors bring in all the money that the shroomery needs, to my knowledge.

I do agree Ythan was a bit harsh with his post... But then, we have to realize, he is quite correct - if the admins say there is no debate on the subject because they want it to happen regardless, it is going to happen regardless because for all intents and purposes, it is their site; we're just members (and if we don't like it, we can leave).

Personally, I think this isn't something that should go without input from the community, but that's just me.

I am still (as of writing this) waiting for my question from the topic The shroomery Street Team, Members Wanted to be answered:
Quote:
How do you intend to verify that street team members are 18 years old, and how do you intend to enforce these rules on them?

My main concern here is that the shroomery will take some heat because of some under age street team members and I am 100% sure that under age people *will* get flyers, pamphlets and what not that they are supposed to be NOT getting. It's just going to happen, and you know it is.

Though I do think the whole promotion thing IS somewhat of a bad idea. Let people find the site the way things like lucy find people...stumbling upon one another in a moment of happenstance.

Of course money plays a roll.. the stuff people are wanting and what this place really needs to move to the next level.

1. decentralization of information
2. mirrors
3. bigger better hardware
4. redundant hardware

None of this happens by itself. The main idea of this website has always been to grow and spread the information in our mission statement. Reaching out and growing means risks.

I don't think the general public is ready to accept sites like these. You are just asking for intervention.
Joshua's right, money is behind everything. But I don't think you're THINKING about this, too much attention is going to force spores to be illegal, then what do we have and what sponsors do you have.

Money does has something to do with it. It's not the only factor or even the main one, but it's necessary to keep things running and we bust ass for this site, there's nothing wrong with trying to get a little something in return. I'm harsh in my posts because I think it's obnoxious when people who take advantage of our free services and do nothing for the Shroomery decide it's their right to start telling us how to run things. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a mellow guy who values feedback and takes it to heart. The one time we make a decision without going through an extensive member review process, I expect people to cut us a little slack. Don't think the potential (but unlikely) risks didn't occur to us or that they weren't discussed. People really aren't bringing anything to the table here which hasn't already been hashed out among the admins.

Ok, apparently people are skimming my posts .  I like the current state of affairs, where curious people come through their search engines, ask their questions, and leave.  There's going to be a lot a lot more of those, I anticipate, if the street team does a quarter of the job it should.

Quote:

"shroomz", shroomery is not in top 10 results, "shrooms", shroomery is 1st result, "magic mushrooms", shroomery is 3rd result.  Couple that with you and I both knowing how google works and you know as well as I do that doesn't show the shroomery is not low key.

Perhaps, the error here is that we are talking about different things for low key?  To me, the shroomery is low-key because I can take 100 people I meet outside, ask them if they know what the shroomery is, and maybe 1 or 2 will.  You're going to change that, and by my take, it won't be so low key anymore.

I agree full,y we need some sort of AVS for street team members. As for fylers falling into the hands of people under 18. Everything will be done to avoid this. Most events I can possibly imagine any of this going on at would be 18+ events and would be given out inside the event after they have passed through the gates.

There is no way to be 100% certain.. Just like there is no way to be 100% certain we don't have members under the age of 18. All we can do is everything in out power to avoid it as much as possible.

Hehe, no no d9 I'm not talking about you specifically or even any individual in particular. And some mods have also voiced opposition, nobody can argue they don't contribute to the site. I guess I just feel we're being ganged up on and it kind of makes me less receptive to what everyone has to say. It's always been my position that we're nothing without our members and they all have some degree of ownership in the site. At the same time I think we have a pretty good track record when it comes to managing the Shroomery's growth and I wish people would have a little more faith in our abilities.

Sweet, look forward to it - it's quite understandable how you'd feel ganged up on. I've only seen one member totally for it, and maybe two (regular) members in this topic say they are wary but look forward to it. There just isn't much of a pro-voice here.

I don't think it's fair to say we treat our members' concerns as meaningless, in general we have a great record of acting on the community's wishes. At the same time please understand we do a lot for the site, more than I think most people realize, and when we feel strongly about an administrative decision we have to be free to make that final call. We can never please everybody so ultimately we just have to do what we think is best, but we are always accountable for our actions and if we make a mistake we'll do everything in our power to fix it.

Sure, I think I've made my position clear (maybe a little too clear heh) but you're right, the mods and other admins did have some insightful comments. I'll leave it up to the individuals what they wish to repost, but I'll try to take some time today or tomorrow to address individual concerns so people can better understand where we're coming from.

At the same time I think we have a pretty good track record when it comes to managing the Shroomery's growth and I wish people would have a little more faith in our abilities.

as was said above, i also trust your judgement and have faith in your abilities, Ythan, and appreciate when you say you are prepared to backtrack if this blows up in our faces. i am one of those greens who strongly disagrees with the idea, but i accept that this is an admin decision. i'm glad to see this thread here in feedback forum though, and also that everyone is being respectful in their choice of words. did all the 8 admins really unanimously agree on this, as you said - cos that really surprises me. actually i'm more surprised that you didn't anticipate the negative response from shroomery members, especially the long-termers?

it's the idea of trying to use the press to our advantage that most bothers me, not a few flyers at festivals. the latter will attract the free-thinkers we embrace, the former is an uncontrollable snowball on its way to hell.

I am not at all ungrateful, I do know you guys work hard and it shows.

I am merely concerned, and I think by having members express concerns--as we have--it will hopefully make any decisions being made thought about a little more deeply and carefully. I am not ungrateful, and I dont think that anyone here feels that way. We are simply concerned with the future with the shroomery and OMC in general. Counter-cultures usually survive just as that--not in the public spotlight. I just worry about cultivation forums disappearing in light of govt/public spotlight, etc.

anyways, I'm sure you guys thought of this, and I'm sorry for coming across as rude, I am just VERY concerned about this. I would also be interested to hear some of the logic of the Admins... and what the ultimate goals and reasons are that outweigh the obvious risks.

John Allen writes books on the subject, goes to conferences, openly spreads the word on safely identifying mushrooms. This does good for the whole community as it shows we want people to be safe and smart out there. He should not only do this, but spread the word even more if he can. Imagine if people like him felt it was best to hide his passion for this hobby and not share his knowledge with the world.

I understand that you guys need to make decisions, but I think alot of these were made without keeping the members in their best interest.

I know you're mad when posting this so I won't take offense. I've spent countless years here as well as the other admins doing the dirty work of running a large drug based website. In fact I've had the distinct displeasure of dealing with the media and documentary film makers after the sad death of our friend Ripper (Brandon). The amount of heat our website was under was unreal, we had reporters in our chat rooms, people emailing me from CNN, BBC, etc.. Even had a long AIM chat with a reporter from the NY Daily news, which actually ended up being a reporter who helped the Shroomery by keeping our name out of her report which was a report that was picked up on the wires and copied, which was great since nobody even mentioned our website. To this day I can't believe how well we handled this media blitz on our home.

I spent countless hours investigating threats of lawsuits on our site for numerous threats we've recieved over the years. I've spoken with an internet law specialist who's also a professor in UCLA. We've learned so much about what threats we could face and what we've learned is vast.

In fact I many years back opened a back channel of sorts with the other major drug sites like Erowid, Lyceaum, etc.. Who we all agreed to keep in the loop if we faced any threats from the anti-drug mad USA or even special interest groups.

Now could I put into hours the workload I personally have spent dealing with internet law, legal threats, etc..? No, but we are not naive by any stretch of the imagination, we'd never put our community in harms way.

Quote:
You'll lose valuable posters to a swarm of newbies, you'll get high schoolers, you'll drive spores to being illegal and who knows what other ethneogens.

The site constantly grows, and always will. The idea of people at cool events being attracted to visit I think is way better than kids sitting at school looking up ways to get high after class. We are promoting #1 safe/smart use of mushrooms, dispelling common myths, and that to me is information we should not hesitate to be actively trying to spread. That is our mandate since 1997, to stop the dangerous spread of mis-information out there, and believe me we all know there is a lot of that.

Quote:
anyways, zieg heil, guess the decisions done and you're worthless members dont mean anything... not that we ever did, apparantly

Sigh, I love being called a nazi dictator  These Admins are all friends of mine, every one of them cares more about this community than they should. All of us are users of the site too, we are part of this community. But in all instances someone does have to make decisions that not everyone will like. This has been the case since day one, Ythan created this place and he could run it like many other site admins, with no input, and doing things he wants with no regard for the community of users.

However he does not, in fact we all care deeply about the repurcussions of our actions and decisions. We don't take things lightly nor carelessly.

I guess its one thing people will always have a problem with because you don't see what these admins do behind the scenes, how much countless hours and how much debate we all put into the future of the website.

I believe strongly in not hiding, I think its key that we promote safe/smart drug use instead of allowing DARE and others to fill people's heads with lies.

Information is power, and we have an ability and oppertunity here to empower thousands of people directly. That is something we should do under the website's mandate.

Ythan and Zippoz, I am sorry if this thread has made either of you  or the other mods who made this decision feel ganged up on.  It was not my intent to brew trouble and I am wondering if I should have said anything in the first place.  You have to admit, it's made for good debat though.

I am NOT ungrateful either.  The services you provide here are invaluable. That being said, there are obviously quite a few people concerned over the effects this may have on the community here.  And yes, some of your posts have seemed...  well, a bit like you don't care at all what we think.  I doubt that you really don't care, but I think that some of the hotter posts we're seeing in this thread may have been spurred by the attitude conveyed in those earlier posts.

I will put my faith the board's decisions and hope that the Shroomery will only become better because of this decision.  As you have said many times, the decision is final.  As such, perhaps instead of complaining we should all focus on how we may be able to help make this happen WITHOUT all the fears we've been expressing.  "mmMMMMmmm, wise we must be." So it can be frustrating at times when people are so harsh towards us, and thats because we are human. People choose harsh terminology like nazi's, 'you dont care', 'you havent thought this out', etc..

I mean its hurtfull because you spend sooooo much time on something you love to only be treated this way only too often by frustrated users.

The thing is this will always be the case, sad as it is to say, but I've been doing this for a long time now and this is the way it has always been.

It's not like we're going to be promoting this site just anywhere. It's going to be at raves, festivals, concerts...the type of places where you'll find plenty of fellow psychonauts. The type who could benefit from the knowledge this place has to offer. This site is already big beyond what I ever imagined it could be, and if you don't think that cops or the DEA already monitor the site, you're fooling yourself. If there are repurcussions, the admins will be the first to feel them, and I trust them in their decision.

I'm one of the mods who raised some very explicit questions and criticism regarding this whole project. I was pumpin' adrenalin when I was presented with the plans.
I have found my peace though, and let me tell you why.

The Admins own the website. Now the Shroomery website is not some free webspace you get with an email account: it is hard thinking, hard work and hard ware. We moderators spend quite some efforts and deal with some aggrevation at times but the Administrators take ultimate responsibility and have the best interest of the Shroomery in mind.

People should stop whining that there are "powers that be" who are doing the politics and policing of the Shroomery. The Shroomery would not exist without hierarchy and top-down decisionmaking.
It's amazing how the responsibilities of modship turn you from a kind of anarchist into a politician/cop.
RESPECT TEH AUTHORITAH

At first I had quite strong mixed feelings but I found my peace.

The administrators have made up their minds and decided this is the the way it will be. Now let me reproduce Vampire999's post from this thread because I believe it's not appreciated to the degree it deserves:

Quote:
Of course money plays a roll.. the stuff people are wanting and what this place really needs to move to the next level.
.
1. decentralization of information
2. mirrors
3. bigger better hardware
4. redundant hardware
.
None of this happens by itself. The main idea of this website has always been to grow and spread the information in our mission statement. Reaching out and growing means risks.

Shroomerites: we have arrived at a new era in Shroomery evolution. Exciting things that were pipe dreams before now seem to get within our reach. The Shroomery will break out of it's cocoon and unfold the wings of a beautiful psychedelic butterfly. International website mirrors. Spreading the Information across the world. The Shroomery mission statement is to stop the spread of dangerous misinformation and basically providing correct information has become an important addition.

Its time to think beyond our former limitations. The flowerpot is filled with roots: time to transfer it to a bigger pot, and take cuttings and spread them to friends. We are at the dawn of highly exciting possibilities, possibilities saving lives and greatly enhancing the Shroomery experience, as well as securing the Shroomery for the future. "Shroomery Promotion" is but the tip of the iceberg.

It is very exciting and quite frankly very scary to turn the page and write a new chapter in the annals of the Shroomery. The admins are upping the ante, and with it comes alas a greater risk.

The administrators and moderators of all persuasions are planning to make this as safe and successful as possible. Perhaps the idea stops at the drawing board because risks are too high. Perhaps it will fizzle. Maybe, in the worst case I have thoroughly looked at, we will go out with a bang and perhaps a next-generation Shroomery will rise. But quite possibly the Shroomery might erupt into the most beautiful thing it could ever be, and our adolescent young Shroomery will become a fully adult Shroomery with a great future ahead.

It's very scary and it's very exciting. I have decided to give this administrative decision my full support and try to lay down weekly hours so that together with the members, mods and admins we'll try make the Shroomery into the best thing it could ever be.

The Shroomery can be far more than it is now. And I don't mean membercount. I feel that going with this new development will give the Shroomery the future it deserves.

I know I sound quite excited, that's because I am. I think most of you can see the benefits of international mirroring.
Trust Vampire999 on this:

Decentralization of information = key
Mirror sites = key
Major hardware = key

For these background issues a donkeyload of very real money is needed, and that would be one reason for membership expansion. But the goal is a better, completer and, yes, larger Shroomery where the boards are but a part, but the community is more than ever at the heart of the site.

:heart:Long live the Shroomery

I don't want anyone to feel like they're getting ganged up on, there's no personal matters at hand here. I think there is a certain amount of controversy/discussion/bitching you should expect when you decide to impliment something of this nature without any discussion (among members) first. To expect anything else is, well, just a little foolish. But the controversy we raise, I think, there is something to be said for. It shows how much we care for the community. The emotion we show is only a reflection of the emotion we have for this site. No reason to get bent over it, it's just a matter of perception.

This is not the case with the Shroomery. There are, as you said, thousands of users who depend on you. Whether you want to be accountable to them or not, they depend on you and the admins.
I know it is not your job to keep them safe, that you are not their provider of security, but I would hope as, what is probably the biggest influencer in the OMC, you would at least try to not bring unneeded risk to the members. I'm sure you do but I fail to see how this can not be thought of as a huge risk. You say we don't fly under the radar now, that we are already a huge site but this doesn't address the FACT that the people who are here, come seeking the information. Putting ourselves in the forefront of discussions for the public to judge is a completely different subject altogether.
Public policies aren't made until there is a public concern.

First of all, I'd just like to point out that my "zieg hail" comment was taken way out of context in later posts.  If you reread the original post I made and the one I was responding to, you'll see this.  I was responding to his attitude, and I've NEVER before referred to the mods/admins this way...

now, with that out of the way  I'd just like to say AGAIN that no one's ganging up on the admins and I think everyone appreciates their hard work.  I just get concerned with some of the goals of the site.  We already stop the spreading of misinformation by those who seek it.  By adding publicity, what is the goal?  to take on the drug war single handedly?  I guess I just dont see how the benefits outweight the risks.  So we get more newbs who stop by and make one post "is this myth true?" without searching, get their answer, and leave, w/o ever contributing again.  I see that happening in the future, in fact it's already happening, and this expansion has decreased the quality of the community, IMHO.  I don't know any of the posters any more, many are one time visitors to get their quick answer, often posting in other peoples threads with a totally unrelated question.  If that's the direction you are headed for... that's fine.  I just don't see how we're not already doing our job to those who already seek it.

Anyways, thanks for listening, and no one is intending to get hostile.

Hmm outside of the emotional impact of his death, the site didnt change drastically, in fact we made small changes but otherwise the site continued to operate normally.

After reading your other reply it seems you are only really concerned with the media aspect of this, like I mentioned in an earlier reply no decision has been made that we will do any media releases.

In fact we are only agreed on having a street team at events where our info cards could be spread out to people who can benefit from them.

Everything else is still up for debate, in fact the media is something I personally am weary of, and would find hard to accept us openly going to them to promote anything from the website.

The thing that worries me is how do you intend to stop this from happening again?  They're not *always* going to withold the name of the website.  It's going to get dirtier, I fear.  This is not to say I am not unappreciative of all the hours and work you have put forth...  If you hadn't done that, I'd never have spent the time to when I did to be here, 'cause it wouldn't have been here.  I am in your (the administration's) debt.

What you need is public ampitheatre type debates.  A venue where interested parties, such as myself, can view YOUR debates and feelings and thoughts on important policy decisions such as this, so it is fully shown how it was thought about, what was presented, and so on and so forth - then no one can say you didn't think it out thouroughly and critically without being pointed out that it was so.  They don't have to be live debates, either.  You could do them in a locked secret room on IRC, in a locked secret forum here, and then export to a user read-only forum.  It's an idea.  I'd thouroughly enjoy it (along with a sister-linked user-comments type thing in WA&F to a specific debate).

Paradigm said:

I, for one, aknowledge and know this.  I am not saying we are low key to law enforcement - law enforcement *probably* learns helpful things from US on occasion and may be one reason why they let us lie for now.  The dangerous group that does not currently monitor this site that I would like to see continue to not monitor this site is the General Mass Media.

Wiccan_Seeker, good post as always...  Your persuasive cutting analogy with the butterfly metaphor has got me thinking it might be worth the (large) risk.

im sorry to have been absent from this thread for so long. and let me state my piece, or atleast the first instalment of it.

okay, as i see it there are a few issues that are being brought up here.
1) people are afraid of the site becomming to high profile.
2) some people have a problem with the financial aspect of this website
3) some members/mods are upset as they have not had a voice over the creation of the promotions.

well as it has been explanes to me, and i agree after looking at the numbers, this site is not low profile by any means.
Also the world runs on money, server space, hosting, the license for the bbs and lots of other things that break and send the admins running into the night to get replacment parts. it takes money to keep this site running.
And we dont run this site, the admins do in the end its their say.

there is also alot of concern over the legal aspect of this site. i also share a concern about this. i do not think that there is any legal precident over somthing like the shroomery, and that not many similar sites are run in this country.
however im sure that there is a lawyer out there that specialises in these sort of issues, and im sure that we will find him in time.

I do not mean to offend, but if it comes to speaking in written form to the Media, I do not think zippoz is the person for the job, unless you assign him an editor, lest I fear we come off as drug addled imbeciles.  I'm not an English major or anything, but I do know a few things here or there - anyone feel free to corect me back, I love to learn

To whit:
zippoz said:
(capitalization needed) im sorry to have been (akward phrase) absent from this thread for so long. (unnecessary conjunction, capitalization needed) and let me state my piece, or (two words together and I think needs a comma after) atleast the first instalment of it.

And so on and so forth.  Head of Promotions is a lot like (at the least related) Public Relations.  He is the person the public will look at as our head representative.  At the least he could start using the spellcheck more often.

And now some substance:
zippoz said:

well as it has been explanes (sic[, obvious typographical error as the 's' is next to the 'd']) to  me, and i agree after looking at the numbers, this site is not low profile by any means.

And yet, I maintain by some means this site is indeed not high profile.

I can ask 50 people on the street, 50 people on IRC, or 50 people on Yahoo! Chat - whatever place you want me to take from a random sampling of people, rather than a venue such as a rave (which I agree is the RIGHT place to do it, but raves are hardly high profile) and only a few will know what The Shroomery is and less know what it does and really stands for.  Asking those same people about something high-profile like AOL or Tom Cruise or what have you would yield better results.

We are in the counter culture, underground - by definition, low profile.

Surely the police and other agencies know about us and most likely even watch us, but I say again, thus far the major media outlets are NOT.  I want to keep it that way.  Low profile.

I fully support the promotion of this site. It can't just remain static with the current members it has plus a few noobs a month. Just because we'll have voices at large events and such to promote the Shroomery, it doesn't mean it's going to explode or get a sudden influx of mainstream attention either. Chances are the people who would come visit the site are the same type of people that are already here, except there'd be quite a bit more of them if all works out.

And if people bring money to the site, that's not a bad thing either. With money, the Shroomery could fund starting an online merchandise store leading to more money, which could be used partially to make the site better. Some will, of course, go to the admins, but they deserve something for all the time and effort they've put into this site.

I don't think the Shroomery should remain in the mostly static phase it's in. We get a few new posters, occassionally see the forums rearranged, but how much has changed? How much of a difference does this community make? For better or for worse, I believe it needs to expand.

It's not about keeping the site up, it's about expanding it further. That's why there needs to be more money coming in.

Anyway, here, this is exactly what I am talking about, in a news item posted by Anno just today:
Generation Rx
Quote:
The explosion in pharmaceuticals has been magnified by the Internet. Not only are there more psychotropic drugs to choose from, it's easier than ever to learn what to take, how much to take and what effects to anticipate. Luke scoured sites like erowid.org--"documenting the complex relationship between humans and psychoactives"--for information and "trip reports" on everything from peyote to Percocet. From there, teens are one click away from an illegal online pharmacy, a cyber medicine cabinet offering quick, discreet delivery.

This isn't the most positive presentation of erowid, I would say.

And how many of the 33,300 users have posted in the last six months? It doesn't mean anything but a number if they aren't here.

The actual number of regular members is much less than that.

Do you really think a magic mushroom forum will grow as big as Erowid though? The Shroomery and Erowid are really two completely different types of sites. Erowid comes under a lot of fire because it is a commonly known site with information on all drugs, from the mainstream to the obscure. Even the Shroomery just links to Erowid or copies information when talking about some more obscure or hard drugs much of the time.

But these forums are just a community that I doubt will ever grow to become as famous as Erowid, especially by just promoting it at some large events. Much of the Shroomery is just idle philosophy or politics, or sometimes just conversations like you'd find in a chatroom. It's not anything like Erowid, and I doubt it'd come under the same fire as Erowid has.

And the attention Erowid has gotten isn't necessarily all bad either. If Erowid is publicized as a place where information about all drugs is contained (heavens no!) then people might actually log onto it and check out real information rather than believing government propaganda. Those who don't care enough to even check it out are those who don't matter.

This is the information revolution. At such a time when people need to be informed, I think the slight possibility of negative attention needs to be accepted.

I guess I'd just be concerned about the manner and the persons who would be distributing said promotional material.

There're responsible cultivators and those that take psychedelics...and then there are, well, let's face it, hippie flakes.

If someone's not interested, or too dumb to the legwork and reading this site offers...maybe they ought not to be shown the site?

I mean, there already was an acid wave that failed to really mature...I don't see how promoting this site would do anything but harm.  Just my, thoughts, tho.

What stops those people from finding the site through the typical methods? i.e. search engines, word of mouth?

You guys act as if this site is populated with the cream of the crop in terms of psychedelic users, when in reality, there are plenty of people who frequent the site that many of you would consider undesirable.

Personally, I was interested in mushrooms AND the internet both for YEARS before I found the shroomery. I'm lucky I found this place and I'm sure the same goes for many of you. I really don't think the influx of new people to the site will be nearly as scary as you guys fear. New people show up here all the time!

I found this site out of sheer luck. There was a link to it on some artists web site I found through the erowid art vault. I'f I wasn't browsing those links out of boredom I would likely still not have any idea what the shroomery was.
I think promotion, if handled intelligently (which I think it very well can be) would be more than great. Not just to make this information more readily available, but, like has been stated above, to help this site continue to grow into more than it already is.  It's a great resource, but the potential is huge. I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually believe a site like this if properly managed and developed could do great things towards reshaping common notions and perceptions of psychedelics, and their effects on individuals as well as communities. Not simply amongst fellow "psychonauts" either.
Not to get to far ahead of myself here, but one thought that kept entering my mind as I read through this tread, the rejections, rebuttals, questions, and so forth, was the simple fact that If any of us ever hope to see psychedelics, mushrooms in particular, more widely accepted, and (gasp!) even have some laws relaxed (save the laughter) Something somewhere is going to have to ignite quite a spark, and sure, take plenty of risks. I'm not saying this spark should or would come from the shroomery itself, but it sure is a hell of a good starting point, there's really nothing else like the shroomery to bring so many like minded individuals together who discuss topics such as this. I just hope this would be the goal of many shroomerites rather than few.
That being said, for this reason I personally think that any expansion and promotion of the shroomery, again, done with absolute care and caution, is not only brilliant and commendable, but also necessary. I'm one who believes that you are either going forward or going backwards at all time, almost never are you standing completely still, so with that in mind, as long as the admin's are still trying to go forward with this site and not let it slide back, I think they are doing a good job. I also would have a really hard time questioning their methods I guess, seeing as things seem to be going pretty well so far. Someone knows what they're doing.

Continue to take it further!

such as www.shroomery.org/roo for flyers handed out at bonnaroo
or www.shroomery.org/demf for those handed out at the fuse music festival and so on

the url would log the unique visitor's ip and automatically transfer them right to the site

it would be the best way to gauge the accuracy of the promotions.

Indeed, most people I know go directly for the main URL, that's kinda like starting on the first page of a book.

Broadly generalizing the sixties had two kinds of hippies: The hippies who sat barefoot in the park all day smoking pot, and the ones who actually took part in the revolution.. and sat barefoot in the park in the evenings, smoking pot

It's scary, it's exciting, but I believe the Shroomery should not just sit in the park all day smoking pot but actually be part of the Fourth Psychedelic Wave (50's, 60's, 90's and now the 00's) and perhaps be a lead player in bringing it about.

The Shroomery has huge potential that lies dormant and it has the potential to grow far beyond its current limitations.

Ever heard "someone should do something"?
Well i agree with the Administrative decision that that "somebody" is all of us, the Shroomery, and the "something" that needs be done is forged as we speak on all three levels: among members, mods, and admins.

The Shroomery Commanders have decided, the Shroomery Generals are taking position and the Shroomery Troops are deciding their stances.

So it's Drug War they want? It's Drug War they'll get. Let's smite oppressive law enforcement with majesty, dignity and psychedelic brilliance. Let's make this site into one of the finest examples of Drug Culture and meet oppressive aggression with our arms wide open, armed with the truth about psychedelics, community spirit and meeting the dangerous misinformation with truth and honesty.

Psychedelics arent naughty, nor are they criminal in the true sense. It's time to get respectable, and get the respect we deserve.

Wake up, there's a Revolution going on :thumbup:

it's an ambitious goal, but part of the reason that the past "revolutions" didn't work was... well, lets face it, they were run by a bunch of stoner kids.  no one took them seriously, and no one will take this site seriously.  Adults dont take 20 year old kids dressed like bums with tattoos and dreads seriously (or 16 year olds posting scat pics for that matter).  I think that's fucked up that we're judged by these things, don't get me wrong, it's just kind of the way the world works.

I think it's a great idea, but I don't see the shroomery changing the course of the drug war at all, except to maybe make examples of us.

I think the most logical thing for us members to do is to reserve judgement until we hear a lot of the details of the plan. Obviously leaving maps to mushroom hunting grounds with shroomery logos around playgrounds is not the best idea.

But, showing up at raves and festivals with a group of 2-5 trained people to handle psychedelic crisis quietly, co-operating with security to help the most people, like MAPS did, would be a great way to responsibly promote the site.

I imagine the plan is somewhere between these extremes. Lets give the admins some credit, and reserve judgement until we hear more details.

Exactly what we'd hope to do, spread info on mis-information of mushrooms. This is our mandate, and is our goal with all this.

It definately won't be extreme in any way, we will simply use common sense and watch carefully what we say on flyers, who we give them to, and where we hand them out.

Spreading knowledge is a smart thing to do, I think its a duty to help fight against mis-information and be out there helping people with facts instead of fiction that DARE and others spout.

Yeah thats the stuff  :heart::thumbup:

Generally speaking: it's easy to resist change and shoot ideas down at first instinct. It's harder to get specific on your concerns and suggest forms of action that are in tune with the general idea -increasing awareness and membercount of the Shroomery and enhancing its features and areas of positive influence- but in your view are superior to ideas presented to you.

The powers that be made an administrative decision, so let's go from there. Tomk: a great idea!

"And to those of you who say that the seeds found at the bottom of a dime bag are good and viable, Umm... no.
One more thing: Shrooms simply are not as popular as weed. Period. If spores are banned, mushrooms will not be available for future explorers. Mushrooms have a delicate temperment, only the very special seek them out. "

bullshit on all counts.

bag seed has provided many lbs of good herb, go to overgrow and lo ok up bagseed on the forums, and saying that spores being illegal will make mushrooms impossible to find is well, just plain wrong. if spores are outlawed does that mean that all of the naturally growig mushrooms will suddenly stop spoouting? do you think that an underground network wont form?

its like saying because psuedo-ephedrine and ephedrine are being made illegal that there will be no more mteh ever, C'mon

Thor, are there plans on incorporating the Shroomery?

What is the current organization of shroomery.org?

the shroomery is incorporated, i dont think its a secret, and its incororation actually keeps the individual admins and mods free from any personal CIVIL liability. so if someone was to sue the shroomery for somthing that happened here. only the corpoation would take the hit, and the personal assets of the admins would be protected. this may go for the mods as well.... only if they recieved compensation for their work here... and could be considered emplpoyees...

We are indeed incorporated, we've set up an ownership plan amongst the admins so the power is spread equally with no one person controlling the site.

Plus of course the legal protection is nice too, we are still currently seeking legal representation for questions we have and of course for counselling on anything the website does.
