Saying good-bye to old things.
    #4206102 -

When my mom and dad got divorced, he really cut her a bad deal as far as alimony is concerned.  She was entitled to half of the money from his company since she had raised THREE CHILDREN while he had worked, and in the eyes of the law you can totally say that it's half hers...anyway, he hid his money all over the place (Singapore, Australia, Switzerland) and now it's come to the point where she is selling her apartment, the place I grew up.

The money she's getting from the sale is enough for her to live off for the rest of her life, which is a beautiful thing. I love my mother so much it hurts and I'm so glad she'll finally be able to live without pinching pennies day to day and worrying that if me and my sisters are in trouble, she won't be able to help with money. I  her so much.

But part of this is that I have to throw out so much of my childhood. My toys, my notebooks, my pictures.  We can put some into storage, but realistically...I can't keep it all.  This is going to be hard. My girlfriend is coming with me today to help me look through it but I think it's still going to be so tough.

I know they're just things, I know they don't mean anything in the end and that the memories are inside me and they've changed and shaped me even if they're not going to be around, but I don't want to say bye.

I know it's going to be hard, but it's just material things, some things are so very much more important!

Good luck

The love between you and your mom is forever. Photos are the best...keep 'em all .

Photos definitely stay. Also, all my old CD cases are there and I think I'll take the paper inserts from each one and make something cool with them arts and crafts-wise...that could be fun. Hopefully the Yankees are drubbin the Mets while I'm doing all this sorting too.

It sounds silly, but I have all these old dinosaur toys that I just can't say bye to.

If you drive, I bet one could make a pretty cool hood ornament. A friend of mine did this with one of his old action figures. I thought it was kind of funny :smirk:.

This is where you've really hit the nail on the head.  It's hard for us to leave things behind for some reason.  I was told once about a sort of ceremony where you take all your things and you get rid of them.  Burn them, bury them, huck 'em into the ocean.... whatever.

Then you left with memories of the people and places and things that have shaped you.  You don't have your keepsakes, but you'll always, always have the memories.  It goes to show that it's not the things that taught you and made you feel.... it was the experience.

You kind of also get to shed some old skin.  Put some things that you would rather not remember behind you, make your peace.

It all sounds very cleansing.  Good luck to you!

When I was moving from Turkey to Toronto, it was pretty hard to leave behind a massive amount of things. Damn I miss my cd's and lava lamp .

Just let everything flow, just flow right to the center of everything. You gotta turn off your mind and relax, and then just float downstream...
